"The death of a rebel military commander proves that Britain has made a mistake by recognising the National Transitional Council as the "sole governmental authority" in Libya, according to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

Tripoli said the killing of General Abdel Fattah Younes, a former government minister who defected to the rebels, was "a nice slap to the face" of the UK and proof the NTC could not rule Libya.

Mystery still surrounds the death of General Younes, who was shot earlier this week.

Rebels claim the commander and two aides were killed by gunmen after being recalled from the front.

While the Gaddafi regime said al Qaida - a group its claims is the strongest force within the rebel movement - was responsible.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim told reporters: "It is a nice slap to the face of the British that the council that they recognised could not protect its own commander of the army"
    telegraph
"One day after the head of the TNC announced that the body's top military commander, Abdel Fattah Younes, and two of his aides were shot dead, Toner told reporters at the State Department that there were few definitive answers.

"The details surrounding the killing of Transitional National Council's Chief of Staff Younes, as well as two other officers, are still unclear. Our envoy in Benghazi and his team are talking to the Transitional National Council, trying to get a better picture of what exactly happened," said Toner.

Younes had been Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's interior minister and one of his closest confidants until earlier this year. Younes' defection to the opposition, not long after the Libyan uprising began in February, was unexpected.

Libyan rebels said they had summoned Younes shortly before his death on suspicion his family still had ties to Gadhafi's inner circle."

WHY are we accepting the "rebels" as being the legitemate leaders???

On what basis, and what percent of the Libyan population do they represent?

It is an illegal and immoral war that NATO is conducting

Our dear friends " the rebels" that he led !

And we have spent how many millions...? billions...??

Supporting these people we do not know !

Who represent what percentage of the population...we do not know !!!

    (The Independent)

"The credibility of the British-backed rebel forces in Libya has been thrown into doubt after the shock assassination of a top military commander led to claims that the movement is enmeshed in a bloody internal feud.

Increasing evidence has begun to emerge that the savage killings of General Abdel Fatah Younes and two other senior officers – who were shot and whose bodies were burnt – may have been carried out by their own side"

A bit like the blind following the blind. Whatever MESS the current situation appear to be, I suspect , the worse is still to come.

All we (in the west - EU + US ) can hope for is that the oil and gas supplies are not too severely disrupted.

Many Alexandrians feared that thousands of Salafists, who were descending on the downtown district of the city to call for an Islamic state, might clash with hundreds of families of 25 January Revolution martyrs, who have been holding a sit-in at Saad Zaghloul Square since 8 July to demand justice.

According to an agreement that revolutionary youth coalitions and Islamic groups reached earlier in the week, all political forces should have held a joint demonstrations in different cities around the country on Friday to press the government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and the ruling military council for five basic demands centred on social justice and justice for the martyrs, whose killers, mostly police and security forces, have not yet been tried or have been released.

However, by Thursday night it became clear that Islamic forces had decided to ignore the signed agreement in order to turn the “Friday of unity” on 29 July into their own “Egypt is an Islamic state Friday.”

Worse yet, from the point of view of the families of the martyrs and revolutionary youths, the Islamists planned to use the historic birthplaces of the Egyptian revolution, Tahrir in Cairo and Qaed Ibrahim Mosque plaza in Alexandria, as platforms to indirectly press for an end to the great social struggles of the past few months - including the fight for justice for the martyrs.

In Alexandria, a historic stronghold for Salafists, 10,000 Islamists, from Salafists to Jihadists, gave vengeful speeches and chanted Islamic slogans in the Ibrahim Plaza for hours.

Tens of members of the Salafist movement and their Nour Party, two of the largest Salafist organisations in Egypt, used a massive podium with loudspeakers they erected in the centre of the plaza to methodically work the bearded crowd into a state of frenzy.

Speaker after speaker wearing the so-called Islamic, white grab that hang inches above ankles, claimed that majority of the country supported the implementation of sharia (Islamic) law and the formation of an Islamic state.

Speaker after speaker denounced the enemies of stability in clear jabs intended against revolutionary youth groups and leftist and liberal parties who were camping a mere 5-minute walk from the Salafists’ stage.

They charged that a minority of what they called secularists (which they treat as atheists), liberals (which they treat as immoral) were conspiring to offset the results of the referendum of March 2011, which they hope would give them a lever to reach political power in parliamentary election, in order to implement sharia.

Please define what you mean by Salafists..?
I googled it but did not find a clear definition, it was mentioned that it was related to Wahabism...

    The situtaion sounds alarming !!!

I would be terrible to see Egypt move backwards after all they have suffered to obtain freedom.

Yeah that's scary. It reminds me of the Islamic revolution of Iran, which is triggered mainly by leftists and secularists, then Mollahs took the control and named the revolution "Islamic".

It's pretty obvious from their chants and banners and the Saudi flags they were flying in Tahri and Arish and their love of Bin Laden as their hero.

Egypt is a religious country both Copt and Muslims. We DO NOT WANT these Saudi taught fundamentalist radical extremists in our country with their crazy ideology causing havoc.

If they want a country where chopping off heads is acceptable then they should move to Saudi.

Thank God the MB are denouncing them in Tahrir!

These radicals need to be shipped back to Riyadh.

    That's not going to happen.
Egyptians will never let that happen.

We saw their strength on Friday and they showed their true faces to the nation.

We will fight their ideology all the way back to Saudi, it's womb.

Strange dont you think that the US supports Saudi the womb of extremist views and distorted Islam!

Well, you have to remember what happened.. They were given sanctuary when Nasser booted them out of Egypt on the condition that they wouldn't teach their form of Islam.. They did anyway.. and were finally thrown out of Arabia as well.

As Saudi ( at least Hejaz ) is the womb of Islam - its no surprise that SOME EXTREMISTS elements should also eminate from there. Just as Jewish extremists -zealots -now reside in Israel

US support is to the saudi rulers , NOT to all and sundry or every sself-styled Sheikh. :).

Oh please.. Egypt is having a difficult transition and Abu is blaming Wahahabis.

Wahhabis are actually very civilized.. The radical element take their "philosophy"... weird brand of Islam from Sayeed Qubt NOT Al Wahhab.

Let's see if we can dig out some facts abt "Saudi or Wahabi - terrorism "

GAO Report Commends Saudi Arabia's Efforts to Fight Terrorism and Terror Financing

extract : " The GAO's report is an affirmation of Saudi Arabia's commitment to combating
terrorism and terror financing throughout the globe," said Saudi Ambassador to
the United States Adel A. Al-Jubeir.

In the report's cover letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House
Foreign Relations Committee Chairman and Ranking Member, Rep. Howard Berman
and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the GAO restates the central partnership the
U.S. has with the Kingdom on counterterrorism, adding that Saudi Arabia is
also essential to "achieving security in Iraq, advancing the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and ensuring stability in world oil
    markets."

The GAO enumerates several areas in which Saudi Arabia has succeeded over the past eight years, detailing multiple initiatives, including the Kingdom's
public awareness program, its extremist rehabilitation program and the
repeated public condemnations of terrorism by senior government and religious
officials, including Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin
Abdulaziz and Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti.

    Margot!!!!

they were calling Bin Laden their hero!!
they were waving the Saudi flags instead of Egyptian!!

the poor ignorant Egyptians who went to work in Saudi were re programmed and then came back to Egypt and this is the result!!!

this toxic ideology comes across the Red Sea on the ferry back to the villages of Egypt from Saudi!!!!

Saudi is the womb of terrorism.
It's cancer has now taken hold back in Egypt.

You need to talk to Egyptians who come back from Saudi who turned salafist after years working there.

There is no point in jailing caught terrorists when you allow that ideology that makes them terrorists in the first place.
You need to stop the teaching and Saudi does not do that. It gives books away free and exports it to other countries.

The problem that Saudi has, is they allow the salafist to preach that ideology as long as they dont interfere with the self declared monarchy. It's a deal.

The exiles were professors from Egypt.

Your envy of Arabia is glaring..

Egyptians who work in Saudi are more likely to be white collar.

If they were calling Bin Laden their hero, they aren't Wahhabi.

Wonder why NATO lost this battle and the war??

    I quote
“We do not and will not accept any authority other than the authority that we chose with our free will which is the People’s Congress and Peoples Committees, and the popular social leadership, and will oppose with all available means, the NATO rebels and their slaughter, violence and maiming of cadavers. We intend to oppose with all the means available to us the NATO crusader aggressors and their appointed lackeys”.

According to one representative of the Libyan Supreme Tribal Council, “The tribes of Libya have until today not fully joined in repelling the NATO aggressors. As we do, we serve notice to NATO that we shall not desist until they have left our country and we will ensure that they never return.

The tory's thievery and roguery is glaringly obvious even to a blind man!
I only hope Cameron and bLiar and Brown are all hauled before the ICH!
Perhaps then we can all find some justice as its totally missing from the daily lives of the rank and file of western nations!

Remember the lies and deceit of the US UK France Italy!
Remember the lies Iraq .... Afghanistan ..... Palestine ..... Lebanon ..... Yemen .....etc etc.

Margot believe me nothing about saudi makes me envious.

Majority of 2.5 million Egyptians are unskilled. They were employed to do the menial tasks and jobs that Saudis considered beneath themselves.
    Check out Ayman Zohry

If you think they were white collar workers either you never lived in Saudi, you are lying, or you lived there but didn't go out the compound and ex pat circle.

You were not in Tahrir. Yes they were Wahabi alright!
