So, that's up to 72 people shot, with at least 22 killed. This is one of the worst shootings we have had in a while.

It sounds like multiple locations, but you are right about bowling alleys being packed during league nights. .

Any office pool, at Winchester, Smith&Wesson, Browning, Remington, et al, on which state would be next, to have a major mass shooting event, is going to have to roll over the pot, for the next one-- because surely nobody had chosen the square, marked "Maine." When I first heard "active shooter" combined with "Maine," I thought to myself that this person hadn't given much thought to where he could maximize his kills. But I guess it actually makes sense: though the population is sparse and spread out, of course they still gather in groups; but up in Maine, law enforcement must be very light in its concentration, as well.

    Coming soon: Maine bank robberies!

Absolutely !!! It does wonders for a society, don't it??
Horrific on so many levels. The "self protection" defense did not work that well here and in other such evets. The "right" to own etc weapons did not offer these victims any safety .

Well would you look at that @Turtledude: a "trained firearms instructor," can even be among those affected by mental health problems-- who woulda thunkit?

But aren't you glad all those anti-American gun banners, don't hold sway up in Maine? How infuriating, it would have been, if they'd taken away this responsible gun owner's weapons, just because of his two week stay, this summer, in a mental health facility (post #10), or his recently reporting his hearing of "voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard base," where he is reportedly stationed-- that would've been unconstitutional, right? In fact, clearly the only people who could even say, that they thought Red flag laws make sense, are people who really must want to ban all firearms from the public, completely-- it's finally so obvious, to me! And yet, you've seen this, all along-- or were you clued in, to the conspiracy, by some of your own, inner voices?

What's Maine's gun laws? Obvious the shooter didn't follow the laws - was anyone armed to shoot back?

Thanks to the 2nd Amendment, anybody can be armed with assault rifles and go hunting for humans any time they like, and no city, county or state can pass laws sufficiently restrictive to prevent it.

It's early to say whether any of the victims were armed, but mass shootings happen in states with relatively lax gun laws as well. And maybe you think it is reasonable for everyone to go about their daily activities armed for combat, but I do not. Every other civilized country has more restrictive gun laws and is safer because of them.

You're missing the point-- obviously due to your irrational hatred of guns, and deep-seated desire to prevent responsible gun owners, like this trained firearms instructor, from having a means to defend themselves. The problem is that there weren't enough guns! According to this article from last June, only about half of Maine homes, store firearms:

    <Snip>
Maine is abnormal when it comes to guns. Roughly half of its households have them, according to research, but unlike many states with such a large supply, it sees relatively few fatal shootings each year.

But in the wake of another round of deadly mass shootings that have convulsed the nation — including in Uvalde and Buffalo, and another just this week at an Oklahoma hospital — Maine Public asked a gun violence expert what truly sets the state apart.

    The answer: not much.

While there are some trends that may make gun violence less likely here,
the state is “lucky” it hasn’t seen a high-profile mass shooting, according to Michael Rocque, a criminologist at Bates College who grew up in Maine and has studied the circumstances around mass shootings.

It seems rather unseemly to make this new shooting tragedy a leftie issue
Might be time to remove politics from it and bring humanitarianism into the forefront.
The victims don't give a dang about left and right.
    They have been WRONGED !!

Since they have a "concealed carry" law, and a high proportion of guns to people-- I'm gonna say that probably some were. The shooter, though, is not only a National Guardsman, but a trained firearms instructor.

I was being sarcastic. Of course there is a place for guns . That is not the issue. Other nations have weapons and don't have the epidemic of mass shootings that this country does. One might learn something from them.
Wonder what triggered this violent act from this person?? One has to be very angry about something to want to go off on an irrational killing spree. It is insanity to do this regardless of the motive or intent. It is irrational thinking to even consider such an act. There had to be signs in his behavior to indicate that he might be planning something deadly. But mental unhealth is not high on the radar for many.

So it would be imperative to learn why he went off therails at ths point. What triggered this act?? Does he have a history of psych problems?? Some current big stress factor?? Accumulation of stress factors?? What is his support system like. if he has one?
It is NOT just all about guns and gun rights. It is important to examine the whole picture.

Police identify person of interest in Maine shootings and warn he's armed and dangerous

    From CNN’s Sara Smart

Lewiston Police Department identified Robert Card as a person of interest involved in the Lewiston shooting. Lewiston Police Department

The Lewiston Police Department has identified Robert Card as a person of interest in the two shootings in Lewiston.

Card is 40 years old and should be “considered armed and dangerous,” according a Facebook post from the Lewiston Police Department.

Law enforcement officials in Maine describe Card as a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserves.

Here's the full statement from Lewiston Police:

"Law Enforcement is attempting to locate Robert Card 4/4/1983, as a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation this evening. CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts."

The New Hampshire State Police is assisting in the search for Card, including the use of its helicopter, state police spokesperson Amber Lagace said.

CNN's Joe Sutton contributed reporting to this post.

    Live updates: https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/lewiston-maine-shootings-active-shooter-10-25-23/index.html

"A certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserves." I'm gonna guess some hero with a gun would not have been successful against this guy, considering his level of skill with firearms and combat training.
