A black man calmly waiting for his children in a public area gets tazed and arrested without breaking any laws. He was under no obligation to identify himself to police. He did everything within his rights in an extremely calm fashion. The cops in this case should be reprimanded and if this were brought to a civil trial I would hope the victim would receive a huge settlement. This is disgusting.

Cops have no right to attempt to arrest someone who isn't breaking the law and is cooperating fully within his rights.

The Slave Patrols are out in force. Notice that the cops give all of the obvious illegal aliens a pass but they go after black citizens with a vengeance for being off of the plantations.

All I have is hearsay from before the video was taken but from what I saw the actions of the police were extremely unnecessary and uncalled for. I am actually eager to see how somebody will try to justify this.

Any other news source pick this up ? One that starts with out a lecture ? Anyways , if he was on private property and won't leave that's trespassing ... Which would then require ID if pursued by police

Here's another case of Walking While Black:

Beverly Hills police regret holding black producer before Emmys

Beverly Hills police officials said Tuesday that it was "extremely unfortunate" that officers handcuffed and detained an African American film producer who was in the city to attend a pre-Emmy party.

Producer Charles Belk "matched the clothing and physical characteristics" of a suspected bank robber when he was pulled over by officers on Friday evening after he left a restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department.

He was by a school..hanging out and probably not with other parents. He should have identified himself---but apparently he doesn't mind it when suspicious people hang out around a school his children go to. I'm sorry...I don't have sympathy for him. If a white man had refused to identify himself while hanging out by a school--he would have been tased to.

This reminds me of when my older son was in middle school. He and a black kid took a fire extinguisher off the wall and sprayed it. The security brought them to the office. The black kid put his finger in the security guards face and tried to intimidate him. The guard put him against the wall.

The black kids mother came in accusing the school of being racist. And my kid...who showed respect for the cop had to go through the ordeal of being interviewed by lawyers. Its just sick.

Total fatal annual US police shootings, regardless of race: about 600.

Total annual US black on black murders: about 7,000-8,000.

Who exactly is "making war on blacks", again?

These people who have convinced themselves that America is an evil racist nation should find some other place to go where they can be happy Why would you want to stay in a place that is so bad? Especially when you consider that things are obviously getting worse.

This is clearly not a situation about race, it's because he is a man, we all know if this was a woman, there would be no problem. This is a case of sexism. Also, what is his size? If he is overweight, it's also possibly a case of judging someone for being overweight. A thinner person would have possibly had no problem.

I would like to know what happened before the video was shot.

He was there to pick up his children. Does he pick them up regularly? Was he approached by any member of the school staff asking to identify himself or were the police just called on him by a bystander? From the video it seems as though the police asked him to identify himself yet he refused stating that he knows his rights and he didn't have to identify himself.

These are questions that need to be asked. It looks suspicious if a man is waiting by a school and refuses to identify himself by anything other than "Im just waiting for my kids".

Why not just present ID and let the cops know that? Why be defiant and say you don't have to identify yourself?

I believe this whole thing could have been avoided if he were to just show his ID. By him refusing to do so but rather choosing to explain his situation it likely led to suspicion which was why the cops acted the way they did.

Im not saying the cops actions were right and Im not saying the man was wrong for acting like he did. All Im saying is that its easier to just show your ID....

Hell I have cops roll up on me all the time. I love Astronomy and I often find myself in a random field after dark with a telescope. Cops always come up to me and ask me what Im doing (because I guess it's protocol to ask what you are doing no matter what even if its obvious seeing a huge ass telescope next to me).

    It always goes
"Hey hows it going sir? What are you up to?"
"Hey how are you doing sir, just looking around at the stars"
"Oh ok cool, would you happen to have any ID on you"
    "Sure"
"Alright Mr. xxxxxx, have a nice night". or "Hey can I take a look? Oh wow is that actually Jupiter!??"

The end, too easy. Or I could say "Im not obligated to show you my ID I'm not doing anything wrong you dont have to know who I am Im just standing here etc" Which would likely cause way more problems than its worth.

Just show your damn ID, sure don't just put up with any kind of crap the police give you just because they are police but you dont have to fight EVERYTHING. The cops always ask me for my ID. I think it might be protocol to ask for ID whenever they talk to you or something I don't know. Either way I just show it to them its not that damn hard.

People had more rights in Nazi Germany. At least there it was the rule that you always had to have your papers with you for the Gestapo. Is there any specific law in the US that says that a person has to have his papers on him while in the public?

It's a serious question: Are people required to carry IDs when in public? Of course people have to have their driver's licenses while driving a vehicle on the roads. But if a person is just walking down the street is he required to have ID on him?

It's unfortunate for law abiding blacks that so many of their fellow blacks are tarnishing their image.

I have a place you can go...

No one should have to move to be treated fairly under the law. This is the USA, not the USSR.

I doubt that. I can't think of one law that would support using a taser-gun on someone simply because he declined to give his name.

If I am remembering correctly, the article said he refused to identify himself and started walking towards the school. Yes...race was not an issue. The cops may have felt children were threatened.

    You're comparing apples to oranges.

Police are a collective. They have chiefs, unions, uniforms, training, and a rule-book. Blacks are not a collective. There is no chief of blacks, union of blacks, there is no training to be black, black rule book or black uniform.

It's fair to look at police as one group or at least many large groups. It's not fair to do the same with blacks.

If you find a black man who killed 600 people a year, I'd argue he's the greater threat. Until then, police are.

No, that arrest was total bull (*)(*)(*)(*). That man should never have been arrested, never.

No, you are not required to have an ID when just walking down the street. However, in many states, you are required to identify yourself to police if asked. You don't have to have an ID, but you have to give them your name. I don't think Minnesota (where this incident happened) has a law like that though.

Total BS. He wasn't "hanging out by a school." He was in a public skyway in downtown St. Paul, MN - a busy thoroughfare. He was under no obligation of any kind to identify himself. Police can not compel a citizen to identify himself unless they have reasonable suspicion that the individual was involved in some criminal activity. They can certainly ask and they often do... but identifying yourself in that instance is strictly voluntary.

That's not even remotely analagous to what happened in this report. Where do you buy your marijuana? Because it's obviously really good (*)(*)(*)(*)...

No corollary to this story in any way. :weed:

    - - - Updated - - -

Clear-cut case of police harassment. This citizen was under no obligation to identify himself. He stood his ground... stood up for his rights... AND GOT TAZED FOR IT????

    - - - Updated - - -

He was in the St. Paul Skyway -- a public thoroughfare. Nobody had any business asking him to leave.

    - - - Updated - - -

Which has absolutely nothing to do with this story.

    - - - Updated - - -

I don't know if the cops were racist in this story or not -- but what I do know is that they had no business treating this citizen the way they did. Taking him to jail for refusing to identify himself? Total BS. Standing up for our rights is not grounds for getting tazed by the fuzz.

Someone called the police on him. Does that give the police reasonable suspicion to investigate?

A citizen is not required to identify himself unless police can establish reasonable suspicion that he is involved in criminal activity. This citizen was waiting in the St. Paul Skyway -- a public thoroughfare transited by tens of thousands of people per day. Nobody had any business asking this gentleman to leave or subsequently to identify himself.
