The had been a staunch States' Rights party until the early 1950's. Thurmond recognized early on the movement in the party to the centralized control of socialism & switched. His switch had zero to do with race, and all of the other racist that voted against the Civil Rights Act like Byrd (klan member), Gore (al's daddy), Fulbright (Slick willy's mentor), McClellan, Russell (democrat: Senate office bldg named after him), Ervin (of Ervin Committee fame). The racists had no reason to leave the party, and none left for that reason.

21 senators voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Only 6 Republicans senators voted against it, and 4 were from northern states. Goldwater voted against it because he was essentially a libertarian and believed the bill was government overreach. The only other southern Republican to vote against it was John Tower of Texas.

Examine all of the voting by parties and region. The northern and western democrats and some republicans passed the CRA over the southern republican and democrats' opposition.

 

Every House Republican in the South voted against the CRA.
