MLK Day on the way; what would he think today?

Well I for one think the man spoke to every American and had ethics even if he was just a human.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/special/mlk/king/words/blueprint.html

I think he would not be happy with what we have today. We memoralize this man as some sort of icon with streets and statues and celebrations but the best honor to him would be to actually pay attention to his words and not what has become of the movement.

Ever see the episode of Boondocks with MLK jr? That's exactly what would happen if he saw what was going on today.

Dr. King would firstly be happy and proud we have a black President. Then he would be happy to see the last roots of black racism being stomped out in 2012, to be gone by 2030. Then he would become a voice for peace in the world and get the Nobel Prize for Peace. He would die old and happy in 2040ish surrounded by family and loved by the nation. He would have the same regard as we do to our greatest Presidents- people would start hanging his photo in their house next to Jesus.

Which is what makes it so sad that he was cut down before all this good stuff could have happened is happening for him to not see.

Really? So you think racism is going away? Really? Well that being the case we should do away with equal protection and affirmative action and every law that can be used to draw a distinction between the races.

Sorry I think he would not be too happy. Sure he may be happy with the pres until he sees he is a worthless POS and then it all falls apart.

He would be proud that the struggle and progress continues in the face of negativity.

There will always be some stragglers ... but their days are numbered. You can always tell, because their cries are getting louder.

Thanks for the reason in your post. To be honest I live by part of that little excerpt. I do try to be the best at whatever I do. I have found that most people just do not even try though.

I think Dr. King might have mixed emotions about our first black president. Of course he'd be proud for his race... but I have no doubt he'd be appalled at how Barack allowed himself to be marketed and sold by the color of his skin and not the depth of his character.

Which, BTW, we've learned since he was elected... is actually very shallow. If Barack Obama was white, chances are good we'd have never even heard of him.

Either that or MLK would've changed and turned into someone more like Jesse Jackson. With few exceptions, heroes die young before they can make too many mistakes.

He wouldn't be thrilled. It is not "mission accomplished". If he were alive today, he would see that we still have alot of work to do.

What's more frightening is the thought of what would've happened without MLK. We might have a Jesse Jackson Day with a monument in his honor!

He was not a liberal. He was a strong Christian and he certainly exhibited no left leaning tendencies. In today's America, he would have been vilified by the left. The democrats would have dug up and/or manufactured mounds of dirt to tarnish his reputation and silence him. Simply put, the man would have been destroyed...there would be no Martin Luther King Day or no streets named after him.

I think you are correct with that statement.

Today let us remember a Great man who never meant for some of the (*)(*)(*)(*) that is pulled in his name to happen. God rest his soul.

DO you really think it helps (America) to view and call the President in such a manner? (It doesn't.)

As far as what Dr. King would think today... we wouldn't know. The best we can do, is to see what the lives of those who claim to follow his teachings are like, have done or are doing.

Black racism? I think MLK would have wanted an end to all racism.

This is a great example of what happened to MLK's message over the years. Race baiters took it and twisted it into this idea that the only kind of racism that should be fought against is when it is practiced by white people. The huge amount of racism practiced by blacks, Hispanics, and everyone else besides whites is ignored, or even condoned in some cases.

By today's definitions/labels, he'd be branded as a "Liberal", "Progressive" or "Socialist"... most likely. If the status quo and White Americans against him wanted to paint him as negative, then they sure would. In fact, they did it while he was 'alive'.

He was a Christian who crusaded for social justice; a term and concept which has been reviled today by MANY on the "Right". There would likely be no 'tacit' acceptance of today's "Right" by Dr. King.

Perhaps and to some degree. However, Dr. King would nevertheless speak to and address the injustices of the PAST (whose effects are still with us today).

You don't 'know' that; but while we're at it... I imagine that Republicans could or would have done the same, by now.

Perhaps, but I seriously doubt that would be.

I call a spade a spade. That's fine though because Bush was a POS as well. Hell I think almost every politician is a POS with motives that are not in the interests of America the nation. America the group is a different story though.

Nevertheless, YOU don't define "spade" for 'everyone'. Sometimes, people will disagree with you; then you have to consider or deal with what they might call a "spade".

Well, I disagree with your irreverence on the matter... but as an active military member, I suppose that has something to do with your 'right' to to speak as you do. So be it.

The 'corruption' of MONEY in politics is a MOST serious factor (here/beyond)... I suggest we get a grip on it ASAP.

Well I am pretty much anti-politician and anti people as well so wa are all spades of sorts.

I have no respect for self motivated two faced puppets.

Also don't get into the YOUR rights thing. You chose your job don't act like you are special or something. Fact is you went in for your own self motivated reasons not for me.

    I agree 100%

    Okay.

I don't think most people are fond of them.

I do... our rights as Americans tend to DEFINE us; like it or not.

I know how I fit in to the grand scheme; I'm not looking to be seen as special.

Even so, you cannot deny MY role as an American citizen; I surely won't deny you yours.

Yes! Many people don't see the problem with our elections/politicians being bought/sold. I'm glad that you and others do.
