I checked the numbers and they seem to be correct. The comparisons used aren't of much interest to the very youngest humans though. To alleviate this, I added infant mortality (up to 1 year of age), stillbirth (death after 24 weeks of pregnancy), miscarriage and natural loss of an embryo before implantation.



The first few days and weeks in the life of a human are extremely dangerous. Before a pregnancy can be detected with a hormone test, it is estimated that about 70% of fertilized eggs fail to implant. They go unnoticed with the menstrual flow and are lost forever. There is no disease that comes even remotely close to this death toll. If we're convinced that embryos deserve the same protections as born human beings, we need to focus a large portion of our medical research on this issue immediately. Nevertheless, this deadly issue has been widely ignored. Why?

Personally, I am not outraged that the medical community doesn't make much of an effort to save embryos. From my point of view, there is a difference between a born child and an embryo that hasn't developed any desires, emotions or thoughts yet.

By the way, while looking through all those statistics, I noticed that infant mortality and stillbirths are about twice as likely among blacks than among whites. Those are saddening numbers. There is no justification for such a large disparity.
