Just purchased a Les Paul standard. Always wanted to learn to play....taking the leap!

Oh, and a Fender DeVille...

Kudos. I always wanted to own a Mosrite in the 1960's but could never afford one. Instead I settled for a 1962 Fender Stratocaster. Having the "guitar of choice" is always very cool and the Les Paul is an excellent guitar.

One thing I'd encourage guitar players of today to try is check out using a "tube" amplifier. There is a distinct difference between a "tube" amp and a "solid-state" amp just like there is a significant difference between a "vinyl" record and a "digital" CD. Tubes provide a more organic sound IMHO.

Good combination but gonna be LOUD. I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue but don't play it much because it is so LOUD, just outdoor gigs and even then have to watch the volume.

Just sold my only "solid state" which was really a digital. A Fender Mustang III. For at home playing you can't beat it. Most tube amps you aren't going to be able to push into and OD at at home volume. Even the Mesa at 5 watts gets real loud quick. With a digital modler you can dial it in at low volume. Did gig with it a couple of times and it held it's own against some good tube amps but playing live love my tubes.

This made me curious, are solid states popular for anyone else than beginners in the US?
Because in Germany every guitar playing kid seems to buy a tube amp as soon as they finish their first summer job. Although it's often a cheap Chinese model.

Tube amps are very expensive in the US and I don't know how the Chinese can produce them for less than a solid-state amp. The lowest price (off-brand) Amp Head without speakers costs $650 at Guitar Center and a large Marshall double-stack can run over $5,300.

I see Bugera amps are marketed in the States, too. I see a lot of them on stages where young bands play - they're a bit cheaper to get here in Germany.
They sound okay for the low price, would have loved to get one of these when back I was 20. Tube amps were unaffordable then.
I settled on a Canadian amp years ago.

Nice guitar.

How are you finding the theory? Imo pretty much nobody teaches music in an intuitive way. They just give you a bunch of chords and don't explain the reasoning behind them. Pro-tip: start with the major scale and understand how all the modes are derived from it. Then look into chords - start with triads, move onto more complicated stuff later. Take a bottom up approach - if you don't understand how something works then don't play it. Go find out how it works!

Oh, and look into time signatures. Try to count along to music in your everyday life. The vast majority of it is in 4/4, so when you recognize a 6/8 or 7/4 beat it can be pretty fun. If you're into rock check out bands like King Crimson and The Velvet Underground. A personal favorite of mine is below, try to count it out - one two three, two two three, one two three four five six sev

Aaah. Golden Brown.
Odd time signatures in rock music deserve more love.

I wish I could play guitar. Always seemed fun. I got into turntables and djing myself. Don't play as much anymore. My style music is a bit too underground for most clubs

Get a cheap guitar and try it. It's not that hard.

You seem to be doing something right.

The Fender Squires are top quality and reasonable.

Try deciphering some of Frank Zappa's "Mothers of Invention" recordings. They change time signatures and even key in many cases and some of the keys they are played in are really strange like B major with a minor 12th. He was an extemely bazaar composer. We tried to figure out some of his works in the 1960's and finally gave up. Much easier to stick to blues/rock in E minor.

I'd like to hear some of your stuff. You seem like the type of guy that would probably do something pretty original.

They certainly do. There's a whole bunch of interesting metal bands around doing odd things with multi-layered rhythms at the moment, which is great. Saw this lot in a sweaty club a couple of weeks ago - pretty intense stuff. I am in no way skilled enough to play any of it myself, though!

And then there's this lot:

Man, that's not bad. The first one started off a little weird, but once it got the drum and bass part I really liked it. And the second one was just awesome.

Did you coin that genre name, yourself? Or was that a preexisting thing?

Thanks. Nah the terms have been around for a long while. My favorite kind of stuff though. Just not very 'mainstream' friendly like dubstep/bass music.

I play some basic Piano and Trumpet, but I hardly consider myself a musician.

Not really my kind of thing, to be honest, but pretty good for what it is.

Have you come across this guy?

He's doing electronic DJ-type stuff, but kind of in the manner of that multi-layered rhythm metal way - popular among extreme metal fans, and gets booked at metal festivals.
