NAACP wants federal probe after noose put on black Mississippi student

Oh so they needed to hang him from a tree for it to be worthy of being a crime or for anyone to really take any kind of action.

 

What should be done in your point of view? Also I would like to know the extent of his injuries.

 

The alleged perpitrators are all under 17, so what should be done to them and why is this making such a big storm here?

Not sure, but given the history of Mississippi when it comes to that subject it shouldn't be taken lightly.

Many Stone County High School students who attended a prayer rally Wednesday said allegations that white students placed a noose around the neck of a black student and yanked it have been misconstrued.

A racially diverse group of students and residents gathered in Blaylock Park to unite in prayer after their small community came under the national spotlight with the NAACP calling for a federal hate-crime investigation into the incident.

NAACP officials held a press conference Monday, accusing a group of white students, including a member of the football team, of putting a rope around a black player’s neck. At least one pulled on the rope, but several others were involved, an NAACP official said.

Derrick Johnson, the state NAACP director, said witnesses characterized the pulling of the rope as like the tightening of a noose and said the town of Wiggins has “always been a trouble spot” for racism.

But the students and residents who spoke to the Sun Herald on Wednesday disputed those claims, saying the incident was locker-room mischief involving a jump rope —not a rope tied into a noose —with no malicious motivation behind it.

“It was a prank gone wrong,” said Tytan Lee, a football teammate of the black student.

Student Dennis Rojas said the player accused of the act is actually good friends with the black student.

Rojas and students Mikayla Shaw and Breanna Hull agreed with Lee.

Hull said it was never an issue at the school until it gained national media attention.

Gail Collins, a Wiggins resident of more than 30 years, said she’s never personally experienced any racism in the town.

“I live here, but I work on the Coast and spend my days there, but I haven’t really experienced any (racism) myself,” she said. “It’s all good. All you have to do is trust and believe in God.”

 

Funny how there is always a probe when some black kid claims there is racism going on..

Seems Derrick Johnson is more interested in pushing a narrative then finding out the truth.

Does something like this really require federal intervention? If there is a crime why can't local police handle it? Not seeing how this would even be within the purview of federal jurisdiction...

Seems to me that making this federal issue is going overboard. What can the feds really do? Ruin young lives? This seems more like one of those 'teaching' moments than criminal prosecution moments...

 

Sounds like the NAACP trying to create more outrage than what is warranted. The article is a smackdown on the riots they are trying to get started.

 

I think there was zero chance of riots here in the first place. People down here, both black and white, are not so reactionary, stereotypes notwithstanding.

I'm sure there are hundreds of hate crimes that go unreported, and hundreds more that have been reported that are valid. But, the OP seems to preconditioned to assume this instance is 100% true before the facts have been made available.

When you have cases like Duke Lacrosse, Rolling Stones bunk reports, Michael Brown,and Tawana Bawley sensationalized, and they turn out to be complete bullcrap, you're going to have skepticism. And, rightfully so. This is also unfortunate for the people who are really victims of these type of crimes.

 

the south is nowhere as near as bad as some idiots would lead you to believe. There is way more racism, systematic and personal, in cities like LA or Chicago than down here. Lived in LA half my life and I can tell you democrats are a (*)(*)(*)(*) ton more racist than republicans by far. The biggest and worst riots happen in their backyards.

 

Whoever is responsible needs to know that this is not acceptable behavior, the victim needs to know that this is not acceptable behavior.

Well first of all, black folks don't just run out into the streets and start rioting every time something happens. That is just an example of the right wing propaganda that is being spewed these days.

Folks just want to know what happened so that if this doesn't happen again. I know its hard for some folk to believe, but there are plenty of black folks alive today that have seen these types of things happen in the past.

As for what happened, I've posted several updates and it looks like the NAACP blew this way out of proportion.

But, hey, they got to smear Mississippi in the national media for a couple of days, so it's all good, right?
