Why do Negroes insist on being called African Americans? First it was Negroes, then Colored, then Black, and now Afro American! Why the change, they are still described as being black.I am part Native American(Injun)....and could care less about my description. While the blacks sit around looking for respect, the Hispanics are passing them by,and making substantial gains in the work place. Talking seems to be a "Black" pass time, unlike the Hispanic, who is working like a beaver to make money. The pecking order is White,Asian,Hispanic, and last is blacks...

African-American is a separist type of moniker.

Simple, it was the first time they labeled themselves instead of being labeled by the white majority.

I have always found that simply calling people what they wish to be called to be the decent thing.

In the case of African Americans, it does not affect me either way, and if that is how someone wishes to be referred to as, then I will call them African Americans.

I've never insisted on being called African-American (no one I know personally does either). It's easier to use plain colors like black, white, etc.

I don't think the Carribeans call themselves African American and I know a lot of "African Americans" don't call themselves African Americans. Also Negroe is the Latin for Black, so why north americans still use the word negroe is beyond me. I know Latin American countries use the word but that's because they are Latin. The word Black or the self identification as such comes from Africa and Asia, specifically Egypt and Iraq where they called themselves Black. but the time and expressions changed when Idol worship was forbidden and so they went with Tribal monikers pertaining to family inheritance. Then the europeans reversed it all and started labelling ppl and Idol worshipping again (they were knew on the scene)

Because being called "colored" is too ambiguous a term I bet.

Yeah, they like to be distinguished as African Americans because they're still unwilling or uncomfortable in accepting the lone title of 'Americans' to use in their daily lives. Their monikers may be separatist in nature, but their dependence on entitlement programs makes them multiculturalists to the core.

I find the term rather stupid too , i still remember the outrage a white south African cause when he asked to get African American benefits in university .
OP if you are a native the politically correct term is to call you Eurasian-American :)

Speaking as an Expert on Negro’s … in my expert opinion, I would say the best way to find out the answer to your question … is to ask one in person and not on an internet forum!

Then let us know …

Similarly, the best way to know what a tiger's teeth looks like is to get into the cage at the zoo and take a look.

    Not the best idea, though.

That would equate to knowing what someones fist looked like, not their opinion. Doh.

Why do racists insist on calling black folks "negroes"?

Well now Dr. King reffered to his people as "Negroes" in his speeches....so,if the "Man" said it,it has to be fact! I personnaly don't think color should be included in a discription of a person unless its for a quick I.D.....such as the person on the plane is American.....and further I.D. would be"Who is Black".....I think as long as the need to have a discription including race,it will always be an issue....

Some women don't mind being called ho's; others do. Your preference doesn't dictate what someone else might prefer. Seems like simple courtesy to refrain from using a word someone objects to, when talking about that person.

Well you and Dr. King can call anyone anything you want, so long as you're on the internet. But I'd caution what I say to individuals in person, in public ... face to face.

Because you may not get the opportunity to say I'm sorry before the lights go out. :)

As long as we have racists, and as forums like this one proves, we have lots of them, it will always be an issue.

African-American describes an ethnicity with a distinct history and a distinct set of social issues. It seems useful in that context when discussing any sort of political or social issues. As a descriptor, it is not that useful. There are a lot of Africans who do not look the least bit like Gabrielle Union.
