We haven't had a change in the party system here since the Civil War era, but perhaps the time has come for a new party system. American dissatisfaction with the two major parties is at an all time high, as is Independent and third party registration. I think most people in this country regardless of political leaning would pretty much agree that our current party system is not representing the will of the people.

    My idea:

The Democratic Party should merge into the Republican Party. After you get past blind partisanship, there's not a significant difference between the policies amd elected representatives of each anyway. In it's place a social democracy or liberal progressive party should rise, like the Greens for instance. With a slightly more moderate version of the Libertarian Party winning just enough seats to hold the others accountable, and create a bridge between the two when partisanship gets too heavy and delays progress, but not wield any sort of real influence. That way we have a tri-party system that represents most of the electorate, instead of the two-party system we have now that more than half this country is unhappy with.

Do you like my idea, have an idea of your own, or think our current party system works just fine?

You have to find common cause to organize new party.
E.g. African people, Latino people, women, gays have government privileges.
I think we should create party of "Americans without government subsidies"

America's electoral college precludes any development of a three party system on a National level.

I do think we're going to see the death of the Republicans by 2028 at the latest. The libertarians might take them over or we might see a congeries of Nazis, Racists, Personal Sovereignty groups etc. I don't like the second possibility at all as it means we'll have a lot of domestic terror and maybe even a low grade civil war but it seems there are a lot of conservatives who would rather die than live peaceably with people they disagree with.
