The bad guys may not care what you like and since most attacks occur within fewer than 7 yards, you may want to reconsider your choice of shootin' irons for your home defense.

That's just my opinion after 3 DGUs.

    Good luck,

This is Texas in 2023. We have cameras and alarms. We also have clear fields of fire along all avenues of approach. We have nothing of so much value that bad guys would rip us off. There are a lot easier targets with a lot more return for the effort.

NOTE: We are "preppers". We've been preparing for chaos for years. Now that Biden is leading us over the brink (nuclear war? social chaos? economic collapse?... pick one or more), we're prepared. Part of that preparation is to "meet and greet" desperate, violent starving mobs of folks running away from disaster areas. A few punks breaking in, attempting to compromise our safety is no real problem.

Things are very different on the East coast and especially in the cities. I can better understand your choices now that I see that you're confronted with Biden's bungled Open Border policies.

I'm sorry that you and the other Americans who live so close to the border have been put in such a difficult position of deciding what to do when confronted with desperate, violent and starving mobs.

I don't doubt that many who are crossing the border are decent, honest and extremely unfortunate people but it would be naive not to acknowledge that there are thugs and thieves headed north too.

    Good luck,

Great post. I should point out that I was born in the Bronx and raised in the NYC burbs. I left for the Army at 18 and only went back for West Point reunions (my 50th is coming up in 2025). The military (in uniform and out) had me living all over the place from PA, to NJ, from GA to MO, from TX to VA (3x), from OK to FL, from NH to MA, from the UK to Germany, from Kuwait to Iraq, from CA to Turkey, from Israel to Greece... and more. When I retired six years ago, SUPERWIFE and I wanted a place with reasonable housing, great medical care, wonderful restaurants, lot of stores and shops, near the water, GREAT PEOPLE, low crime, fantastic food, no state income taxes, and Constitutional gun laws. So here we are in Texas. By the way, my neighbors include a college professor, a pharmacist, a software engineer and similar.

    TEXAS!!! WHERE FREEDOM LIVES!!

In 50 years, we will have a generation in power positions who grew up under the threat of constant school shootings in their Elementary School classrooms. We could very well see a shift in gun support. Is what it is.

Gees... I don't know any kids that worry about "constant school shootings". You must live in a blue state. They got used to hiding under their beds during the China Virus Tyranny and then the libs kept the their with school shooting terror propaganda.

It must be awful to live in a blue state and live in constant fear.

Lots of transplanted blues in Florida. Many New Yorkers work their whole lives to retire in Florida. Few Floridians save up to retire in New York, though.
New Yorkers brought their fear of the China Virus and guns, plus their knee bending subservience with them.

So a school shooting only counts if it's in an Elementary School? Sandy Hook ring any bells?

Not enough to say millions live in fear over it.
Counts for what? Living in fear?

"who grew up under the threat of constant school shootings in their Elementary School classrooms"

That's your point. Sandy Hook was one of four, in multiple decades.

And yet you knew the name - immediately. My generation knows where they were the day. JFK was shot. They remember the day John Lennon was shot.
The current generation remembers the shootings in Sandy Hook. Las Vegas. Florida. Boston. Colorado. Michigan. California. Texas. New York... it's
    been non-stop for two decades.

Maybe where you live. The young folks here never heard of Sandy Hook and only know Las Vegas from the Oceans 11, 12, 13, 8 movies.
We don't focus on bad things here. We don't concentrate on things that we can complain about. We'd rather understand that bad things happen, but you don't get happily married, your kids don't get successful, you don't get your house paid off and you simply aren't happy if all you do is concentrate on bad things. There are school shootings, yes. That's what we have cops for. We trust our cops. We don't like whiners.
We understand this is an imperfect world. Crime is awful. That's why we have cops. I'll pay my taxes to help them stay at it.
Meanwhile, I can directly influence the world of my family. I'll concentrate on that.

The very fact that you spend two minutes on this web site makes a mockery of everything you just said.

    Try again.

What possible relationship is there between my typing time and shootings? Have another toke.

There is no "constant threat" of school shootings. I guess that means in 50 years we'll have people in power positions who were either lied to, or did the lying.

Be that as it may, people in "power positions" still won't have the authority to ban guns, nor change the Constitution.

    Interesting.
Why was it not non-stop for your generation?

    That was his claim.
I am sure my question will not receive a meaningful response.

We are losing about 190 people a day to fentanyl. That is about the equivalent of a Boeing 757 going down in a fiery pile of twisted metal per each day of the year!

And the leftist are worried about a measly average of less than two people per a day getting shot in mass shootings? I think their priorities could use some adjustment.

    Thanks for your kind words
It sounds like you and SUPERWIFE have also been exposed to a variety of cultures and have finally found a place that is enjoyable to live.

I was discharged from the US Army a little over 50 years ago after some time in Laos. Because of the hostility toward returning Veterans at the time, I left the country and hitch hiked from Stonehenge where I spent a few nights alone to Bagdad and further east. I just happened to be in S. Lebanon near the Syrian border when the '73 War broke out. I had planned to go to Israel, Egypt etc but considered myself lucky to find a drunken pilot to take me and and some poor fellow with dysentary to Istanbul where I knew some Turkish police officers.

Eventually, I moved to Germany where I lived, worked and studied for a few years.
Now, decades later, my very patient WonderWife & I bought her grandparents' big, rambling old farm house with my own target range next to my blacksmith shop.
After 20 years living in Richmond's crime ridden inner city and 3 DGUs, moving to the country was a welcome change.

It sounds like the potential threats you may face are unique in that they are mainly desperate, tired and hungry refugees many of whom may be very good and honest people. But, as I said before, it would be naive not to realize that among the good and honest people, there are also thugs and thieves eager to exploit the generosity of others.

I'm sorry that you have been put in such a difficult situation due to Biden's incompetence and wish you good luck in dealing with it.

    Thanks, again...
