I hate to draw this parallel, but it's the first that came to mind...

You know what happened with Jews were liberated from concentration camps and were given things like... food?

They ate themselves to death, stuffed themselves full and killed themselves.

This doesn't mean that Jews themselves are crazy, disgusting deviates of society or evidence that being a liberated Jew is linked to unhealthy and deadly behavior.

No, it demonstrates that people who are liberated have an unfortunate tendency to go wild, particularly when there is no examples or social constructs around the guide them. It's like the sexual revolution in the 70's. I believe you'll find that as being gay becomes more socially accepted over an extended period of time, they will be less and less likely to be participating in these rebellious behaviors. I call it the "sheltered child goes to college and goes wild" syndrom.
