Beginning today and running through Nov 28, a tribal gathering unlike any other takes over the town of Pushkar in the Thar Desert in India. People come from afar to parade, race, trade and sell their prize camels. It also has music, acrobats, bazaars and dancing under the stars.:)

Some people put forward the belief that Mayans forecast the world would end today by their calendar. However, they have writings where their deities were living in future times far past today.

The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year.

Today is a holiday for the people of Shetland Islands so they can recover from the Up Helly Aa fire festival of Vikings held yesterday. It is the biggest event in Shetland's long dark winter.

The highlight will see members of the Jarl Squad, dressed as Vikings, parade through the streets of Lerwick before burning their replica Viking longship.

The annual festival celebrates the Shetland Islands' Viking heritage and is held on the last Tuesday of January.
