I have been watching the senate and house on c-span while they debated the payroll tax cuts.

I hope that how the republicans responded negatively to the payroll tax cut will help some conservatives learn some truth about their republican representatives.

The GOP decided they would only pass a bill for extending the cuts if it didn't expense the rich in any way. In fact, they decided to throw the oil pipeline into the tax cut bill so that if the president vetoed it, they could say that he hates the middle class.

They weren't even willing to have the payroll tax cut in half for working people and businesses if it meant having a 3% surtax on individuals with incomes totaling $1,000,000.00. People who benefit from this country to be privileged enough to earn that kind of income have a duty to chip in to the system that got them there, not rig the system to triple their incomes and slash the incomes of working families.

This really sheds some truth on GOPCorporate.

Tax revenues over the past couple years are proportionately the lowest they've been in 60 years. Tax revenues last year were proportionately $800 billion lower than in 2000.

I agree we need to cut spending, but we have a UNDER TAXING problem too.

There would be less of a deficit if rich people paid more. Revenue doesn't come from thin air, the "over-spending" thing is partially true, but is more of a move to fill the revenue void from tax cuts. Less government tax income means less money to spend on vital programs.

*EDIT*: and yes, we do overspend, we need to consolidate a lot of overlapping government programs. This in combination with higher taxes for top-income individuals would fix our deficit and keep more middle class people out of poverty.

I believe the dems 90% and the repubs 10%. There are a few non-corrupt conservatives with real values still out there.

I don't think it is an unreasonable request of the democrats to ask that corporations not be able to avoid taxation through tax loopholes and keeping money off shore. If we want to close the deficit let's begin with that instead of the middle class.

That's what I mean. Ron Paul is somewhat reasonable for a repub, but Newt, Romney, Bachmann, Santorum, Perry, etc. are all sitting on David Koch's lap.

How come the repubs, the party of "anti-taxation," fights against tax cuts for us but advocates for tax cuts on the rich!

Isn't this really about the dems desire to tax anyone in order to buy votes while pandering to their environmentalist special interests over the pipe line?

Payroll tax cuts don't make much sense when you're already running huge deficits from federal spending.

I do find the conceit amusing that we can afford these tax cuts and to extend unemployment benefits into forever BUT the Bush cuts were evil and must be stopped.

The rich do no need more taxes, just a simplification and closing of some loopholes. They already pay a HIGH percentage, they just use loopholes to escape paying as much. Furthermore, its hard to take someone like you seriously when you dislike Ronald Reagan just because he was a "republican". Even though he is considered by most on both sides to be one of the best presidents we have ever had.

I agree completely, we should be able to LOWer taxes if our government was at the size it should be.

If the government were the size it was meant to be, there'd be no need to lower taxes.

The only way to limit government is to control their income... pay as little tax as possible, starve the beast.

Great plan. We've been doing it since 1981, except for the Clinton administration.

The beast hasn't starve. And the Govt is $15 trillion in debt.

You cannot starve the beast as long as the beast controls the printing presses.
