This wouldn't be an issue if gay marriage were legal. If the unmarried straight couples are so committed, there is nothing stopping them from getting married to get the benefits. The same is not true for gay couples.

Yep. The military may sometimes be the slowest and most traditional of organizations... but they are on the right track in this case.

If and when someone's (gay) 'spouse' they are heading off a world of problems put in place by that unconstitutional DOMA.

That is a different topic. If the military is giving benefits to unmarried couples it should be all unmarried couples not just those in one of Obama's special interest groups.

Straight unmarried couples to not get the benefits. Obama and Panetta want to discriminate against them

There is nothing stopping gays from going to a gay marriage state and have a Military Chaplin marry them

We disagree on that. Can you provide an actual example?

    - - - Updated - - -

It's about military readiness, no matter how you want to slice it.

I see it is okay to discriminate against heterosexuals but not gays. That is what is known as a hypocrite

    - - - Updated - - -

That is the point the Obama administration is seeking to give benefits only to gays

The OP says only unmarried gays would be eligible for this. Benefits are not about readiness.

A few off my friends pointed this out to me a while ago. One of them was trying to get base privileges for his live-in girlfriend who is the mother of his child. He was about to deploy for the better part of a year, and wanted her to be able to have access to base facilities while he was gone. If they were a gay couple, it would have been a fast process, but since he was straight, he couldn't make it happen.

I'm all for equal rights, but this isn't equal.

I do this military stuff for a living; they don't provide certain benefits for nothing.

And I will look more into this, as it will surely affect some of my troops in due time.

Further into the article, there is this:

This may not seem fair at first, but it addresses something that marriage would. Many gay military members do not have the 'option' of being married.

As I suggested before, the physical and emotional well-being of military personnel is directly related to "readiness".

So why didn't they get married? Problem solved, immediately- something gay people can't do. I'm all for equal rights, but this isn't equal.

But gay people can get married in ten states. Nothing is keeping those gay couples from getting married, maybe the military should require that the gay couples get married to get benefits, just like the heterosexual couples. Why should there be different standards for gay couples?

When the federal government recognizes those marriages and we can wed legally in all 50 states, that will be an option. But since the fed still does not recognize gay marriages, the military decided to take other measures. And you're right, there should be no different standard. So I assume you're all for same sex marriage then?

The problem is not the military's it is Obama and congress that must change it. If the military is going to do it for unmarried couples it should be all unmarried couples not just democrats special interest group

I'm sure they have thought this out far better than you suggest. Even the article referenced does a pretty good job of explaining things.

Even so, compared to other things this nation is dealing with, this is surely a back-burner issue IMO.

Gay people can get married. I know of no state where it is illegal for gays to marry
