I've met all sorts of people. Fear of jail is a factor, but it is not the primary deterrent in many, and for some, it is not a deterrent at all. I'm sure you are aware of some historical, infamous criminals that exhibit the latter. It is a real human phenomenon. Just like commonalities in morality.

Yes. When you give criminals a monopoly, they will protect their source of income by force. If you see something that can can be used against them, your life becomes inconvenient. Abortion laws force desperate women to seek desperate criminals. Patients and potential witnesses will suffer, but at least those with the money for a plane ticket can bypass this suffering.
