Sorry, where is the evidence of political intervention? Are you aware that the US has NHTSA requirements? Do you know that the Hyundai that you lust after does in fact meet the US safety requirements?

Another example - KIA’s EV2 is a very inexpensive vehicle that will be reportedly selling for $15K around the world. Won’t be available in the US. Links below. As somebody mentioned, the US can’t compete with these prices. I agree - and that makes it political.

    https://electrek.co/2024/04/19/kias-15000-ev2-caught-in-wild-most-affordable-ev-video/

As the brand prepares to kick off its low-cost EV offensive, Kia’s cheapest EV2, starting around $14,500 (20 million Won), was spotted testing in a new video. Check out the first glimpse of the Kia EV2 below.

https://topelectricsuv.com/news/kia...,as we earlier speculated, will be called EV2.
    • Kia is not expected to launch the EV2in the U.S.

Yeah, but what about South Korean affordable EVs. They also aren’t coming to the US, because they don’t want to ruffle any feathers.

I have no insight into Korean decision-making, and I suspect you don't either.

It doesn’t require any insight. The small Korean EVs are competing around the world, selling for about $15K. Both parties of our government have been critical of “cheap Chinese EVs”. You seriously don’t think Koreans take notice?

Unresponsive. Also, doesn't account for the battery manufacturer's country of origin. Again. Why post stuff like this? Hyundai and KIA all know what the US standards are. If they aren't bringing the cars to the US, it should tell you that they won't be able to meet the safety reqs.

    You stated this earlier —-
“Hyundai that you lust after does in fact meet the US safety requirements.”

    Was that a typo?

If the Smart car can be in the upper tier of Safety standards, then so can these small Korean models. Fiat, others also make the grade.

    https://www.safewise.com/faq/auto-safety/smart-cars-safe/

    Smart Car Safety Ratings
The Smart ForTwo, the main 2018 model Smart Car, received a four-star NHTSA rating in its category. Some of its safety features include a hefty steel frame and high-tech front and side airbags.

It’s not just the NHTSA that rates the Smart ForTwo high either. The vehicle has received “good” marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the two areas that have been tested thus far.

Apples and oranges. If you cannot document that either of these "cheap EVs" conforms, why have the conversation at all? Are you suggesting that we don't need to worry about the safety of these cars? hmm...

I guess that was a typo earlier? You stated they did conform. Which is it?

I asked if you could cite the vehicles conformity. Perhaps that wasn't clear to you. My assumption, like every other foreign car maker, is that there is a market analysis of the US and those vehicles that would show actual market would then have to be reengineered to make them conform to US safety/gov regulations. If that is too expensive, doesn't happen. Also, there are restrictions on use of batteries derived from China. Perhaps all of those considerations make the choice of bringing these vehicles to the US non profitable, and likely not to be ever profitable. So why would any foreign car maker want to bring the one car over for just you?

You are actually making my point. It’s not just batteries made in China. To qualify for the tax credit, batteries must be made in the US. Ford was attempting to do that, but since the batteries are Lithium Iron Phosphate, the Chinese revolutionary technology. There is talk of blocking this manufacturing, even if made in America, with American workers and management.

I miss your point then. Your point seems to be, who cares about safety, just flood the market with unsafe cars so it will induce folks to want to have one. It's not a good look for you.

Maybe Elon will end the political wrangling. Once again, Elon is talking about a $25K EV in the US. This isn’t the first time, so we’ll see it materialises.

    https://www.carwow.co.uk/tesla/news...ectric-car-hatchback-price-specs-release-date

New Tesla Compact EV coming in 2025: new patent images surface online

Tesla’s self-proclaimed Techno King Elon Musk has already confirmed that the new compact EV could cost around $25,000, or £22,000.

This technology is essentially a new way of connecting the battery’s cells together, and it reduces the size of the battery by around 35%. They can also store and release more energy without overheating, giving them as much as 16% more range per kilowatt-hour than traditional batteries.

it will use a new type of electric motor which uses no rare earth materials.
    ..
make the battery a structural part of the car, helping make it lighter and stronger, 10% lighter.

This new car will be built differently. Teams of people and robots will work on fully assembling separate parts of the car, before marrying them together at the end in one go.
