New story that if it proves out as claimed, an existing drug called chloroquine is said to have a 100% cure rate in reports from a French lab. That would mean no test or approval delay, and there would be known capacity to produce in quantity.

IF that is true- the entire game here is going to change very rapidly.

Great news, if it stand up as written.

The article is filled with encouraging information; enough so that it should be automatically issued to any symptoms sufferer. But -- as I am a cynic -- I shall predict that it won't happen.

It was only 24 people tested for 10 days and 25% still could transmit the disease after the trial....not 100%???

    Hmmm...

Chloroquine - which is normally used mainly to prevent and treat malaria - was administered via the named drug, Plaquenil.
The treatment was offered to 24 patients, who were among the first to become infected in the south east of France, and who had voluntarily admitted themselves to hospital for the process.
Patients were given 600mcg per day for 10 days. They were closely monitored, as the drug can interact with other medication, and cause severe side effects in some cases.

    "IF" being the "Operative Word".

IF, I had $10 Trillion...Then, I could help solve the crisis...

    IF...IF...IF...

That said, Best of Luck to anyone who can bring about a Cure...:flagus:

Even though the mechanism is not understood, there might be something to this:

    https://aac.asm.org/content/53/8/3416

"Our results show that chloroquine can be highly effective against HCoV-OC43 infection in newborn mice and may be considered as a future drug against HCoVs."

Now, note that this is a different coronavirus investigated in this paper.

A note of caution, though: This is high time for con artists and snake oil salesmen, who want to make a quick profit off the desperation of others. Tread VERY carefully.

Second, don't let the potential for future treatment change your current behavior. Social distancing is key to reduce the R0, with or without treatments.

Agreed- this is a good possibility, not a sure thing at this time. It ain't over till it's over. It is however, the first positive news in this whole mess, and that hopefully will lift some people's perspectives.

Very encouraging news....nice to see the Trump Admin working with our allies on this, and beating this Chinese Virus.

One thing that has clearly been highlighted over the past few weeks, is President Trump knows how to handle global events.

Seriously, professors in academia, who are usually funded by the government, do research on chloroquine treatment and you want to credit Trump for it? If it was for him and his voters, they'd shut down any research dollars going to universities.

I credit him for working with the French on this .

where did you get the idea that trump or his supporters wanted to shut down funding for research?
The opposite is in fact true:in 2018 he approved the largest increase in over a decade to funding research.

The French have been looking at it and others since the beginning. Some anti-virals may work on this virus in some people.

other studies I heard say the right dose for viruses is close to being too much and can give one heart problems - so they need to do some testing

if someone dying though, could be an option of last resort

I applaud their research. Of course I'd prefer if they could self-fund, but that's neither here or there now. It's a peace time discussion. We're not in peace time. We're in panic time, as the national government of California has demonstrated what may be our very near future.

I think for some people this medicine would be a cure for the virus. It's also an anti-inflammatory which greatly aids to relieve the problems a respiratory distress which you get when you start coming down with pneumonia
