I've been modifying my desktop a lot recently, and I'm proud of my new setup. I think it's quite beautiful. I gave it a seasonal colour scheme. Feel free to share your own desktops. I'm sure some of you out here share my enthusiasm for customizing your computers.
Gentoo...nice. I run easy to install and manage versions of Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mint and a few others) but never delved into the most do-it-yourself distros like Gentoo, Arch or Slackware. I like the customization capabilities, but never found myself getting into it too deeply before I borked an install and spent my time recovering from it.
Mine's seriously messy and I'm a touch OCD so, not going to show it. I will share my wallpaper de jour.
There's an interesting story behind the Hello Kitty brand. As you know the Japanese are not fond of nuclear technology, well since WW2. It is deeply ingrained in their culture...for example Godzilla...a monster created from nuclear fall-out. It is the only nation to experience the horrors of atomic/nuclear weapons used against them. A design firm was hired to create a friendly mascot to promote a nuclear reactor that was going to be built in Japan. This design is what we now know as the Hello Kitty brand. A child-like anime character being associated with nuclear energy was a public relations move. I won't post my actual desktop, that was just something I lifted from the web. I deal with government contracts and they won't take too kindly to me posting anything relating to my computer...however benign it might appear. I work from home sometimes and so my work computer is also my home computer. Sorry, but I can't post my actual desktop so I went for the humor.
Don't you love how they went from bayoneting people to Hello Kitty over night? It's such a 180 when you think about it... Japan has become so passive... It's like we bombed them into being passive or depressed...
I can't wait for my home sale to complete early next month. I'm gonna upgrade the crap outta mine. Still trying to decide if I should go with the GTX 980ti, or the Fury X.
I'd go for the GTX Z if you can find one for a decent price. All 3 of mine were fried because I OC'ed way to hard for mining purposes. (Yes, Bertha had three) I had to switch to the new radeons because their price went back up. The radeons are 1,500 a piece the titans are 3,000.(Sponsor was a dick and wouldn't pay the extra 1,500 a piece) I like the titans better, but for the price the radeons are worth it.
Yeah, everything i've heard was go with Radeon. I might be more inclined if more TVs had the open-sync vs the widely used G-sync tech. I've only seen 1 new tv that came out last may or so with it. I'm also kinda price conscious, in that as much as I'd love a Titan, my full budget is around 1500. And mining eh? Is that a profitable thing to do? I have a very cursory understanding of how that works but if I could re-purpose some old hardware.....
Depends on what your mining and the hardware you have, I was grinding Litecoins and doggecoins for a good profit. BTC is a waste of time unless you have like $500k to spend on a full operation. I recently invested about 9,000 on my mining operation and I've made that back in a few weeks grinding out litecoins. If I were you I'd put that 1,500 into BTC's the next time they dip to the lower 300's before Christmas. Christmas they always boom up to $450-660 ea. get some extra funds for that rig and make it a Christmas present to yourself.
wow really? .... that's a crazy amount of money. I'm definitely going to do some serious digging. I might wait on the btc investment as the pc upgrade is part of my whole entertainment upgrade. Moving into a new place and getting a new TV and need a PC capable of running Fallout 4. I'll definitely do that next year though. Thanks
Yeah if you ever get into mining learn how to build and flash your own miners, don't buy pre-mades. Just sayin we should start a PF mining pool.
Nothing too fancy here. Just MATE set to Russian and, for kicks, a nice desktop pic from OS X Yosemite (I think). I cleared off my usual bunch of work and personal files for this pic, though.
