My local station was interrupted over a massive shooting in Maine. Picture of a white male with a semi auto rifle-appears to be about 30. A bar, a bowling alley etc have been hit-16 or more fatalities are being reported. FBI is involved

At least 22 people dead and 50-60 wounded, and looks like could be multiple shooters.

Perhaps this thread could have been opened under an appropriate title (as opposed to pre-emptive complaint about gun-bans) in the Current Events.

well the problem with that is I merely saw a news report with nothing to cite and I didn't want to get dinged with an infraction for not following the rather specific rules in the current events section

    Let's hit the checklist:

    1) Gun free zone, a bowling alley serving alcohol
    2) Known schizophrenic with violent ideology
    3) recently committed and no further action taken
    4) literally said he wanted to shoot up his reservist's depo
    5) in a state that actually has red flag laws which the grabbers say would stop all this
    6) police showed up with ABYSMAL response time to every place the ****er popped up

Too bad the MM doesn’t follow your example before they and the useful idiot clack begin their entirely predictable round of BS.

Well he's also a firearms instructor in the Army Reserves, and it appears he was still on active duty (or whatever its called in the reserves), so he's at the very tippy top of the list of 'people that gun banners will still let have guns'.

But I'm sure that won't stop them from trying to use this as an excuse to disarm the rest of us (but NOT military firearms instructors) anyway.

Based on Maine law, it was not a gun free zone, unless you carry so that other customers can see it, meaning concealed carry is legal even if there is sign requesting customers to not carry.

Maine law criminalizes possession of any firearm in an establishment licensed to sell liquor for on-premises consumption if either:
    1) the establishment has signs posted that prohibit or restrict the possession of firearms which patrons are likely to see; or
    2) a patron possesses a firearm on the premises while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, drugs, a combination of liquor and drugs, or has an excessive alcohol level

    Where'd you get that from?

    I got from wikipedia:
"Open carry is not lawful in establishments licensed to serve alcohol for consumption on premises (bars, clubs, certain restaurants and so on) provided there is a "no firearms" sign posted in a manner reasonably likely to come to the attention of patrons or if the carrier of firearms is under the influence of alcohol or drugs by the same standards as apply for operating a motor vehicle"

One of our sources has mixed up the wording. So the question is: is it that the firearm must not be visible or that the sign must be visible?

It wouldn't surprise me if the law is worded in a similarly imprecise manner...

Democrats are the best gun salesmen on the planet. Every time they threaten a ban, 10 million more people go out and buy one..,

Yours says the same thing. Open carry is illegal in places where they serve alcohol AND the owner has posted a sign requesting people don't carry openly.

Yeah it's almost like regulations and rules don't matter if someone disobeys them.

That's a given. The shooter is a military firearms instructor. There's not many places where you'll find them unable to access powerful weapons...

A semi-auto 12 gauge with 3" magnum slugs is a powerful weapon, and you don't need to be a firearms instructor to purchase one....

I dont know, but it's possible, which would mean people could only carry concealed.

So its also possible they had a sign and this guy targeted gun free zones for unarmed victims. We just don't know either way.

...and BTW, I think its perfectly reasonable to restrict firearms from a place that serves alcohol. But it needs to be known that makes it a target for the aggressively violent but cowardly.

No, the sign does not make it gun-free, it only means you cannot carry OPEN, but you can carry CONCEALED.

I highly doubt any place that serves alcohol allows firearms, concealed or not....

according to all the sources I can find, it does. Here's another:

Maine Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW): Gun Laws, Application, Requirements & Online Training – GLS Tactical (gunlawsuits.org)
    • You cannot conceal carry in bars that sell alcohol as long as they carry a post prohibiting guns. Even without such post, possession of firearms under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substance is illegal.
One of our sources is wrong. What is your source?

do you admit that in many areas there is still easy access to "powerful weapons" even if the law prohibits legal access?
