Quite a few reasons.
1) They still have gun incidents.
2) They don't have the conflicting demographic issues we have, or the history which causes the sorts of tension you see
3) They have a far more tyrannical form of government
4) Some places self defense as we understand it in America is not legal
5) Your stats you're going to cite when challenged are going to be adulterated/spun. Example: Gun deaths vs verified unjustified homicide. Gun deaths counts suicides and justifiable homicide.
6) Their violent crime rates are abysmal.

You consider it gun control, your focus is on the gun, because you're American. In the EU etc.. the focus is mainly/chiefly on the person, do they have a suitable background to own/use a gun. That's the difference why the US has dreadful gun stats.

Self defense doesn't include committing crime etc.
Arming for self defense incase someone commits a crime against you is mere prudence, there is nothing malicious about that. There is nothing immoral about that.

It's cultural. The American culture talks about and prioritises the gun, a violent culture. Other country's cultures tend to focus on the people. The conversation is pretty obvious.
