Democracy is neither a quick fix nor a cure-all for all political and social ills. The following are some of the pitfalls listed in the article headlined "Democracy" at http://www.globalissues.org/article/761/democracy 1. Voting in non-democratic forces 2. Minorities losing out to majorities 3. Limited time in power means going for short term policies 4. Those with money are more likely to be candidates In my opinion, democracy has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, some advantages are: 1. Democracy helps to check corruption, though not eliminating it entirely. 2. It is a safety valve for discontented people to change their government without resorting to bloody revolution and uprising. 3. It reduces the chance of having a failed state where the central government and nationwide authorities have collapsed or exist merely formally without actual control over the state territory, thus averting the scourge of warlordism. Some of the disadvantages, from my standpoint, are: 1. Most often, the people that are elected are not the best from the whole population. 2. A lot of time and financial resources are wasted in the election process. 3. Like the highest bidder in an auction, a candidate tends to promise giving a lot of goodies to the electorate. In the end, he either fails to deliver on the promise or risks emptying the state coffers and creating a debt crisis.
