Not everyone is down with having to prove what a macho man they are by having to go blow for blow from an animal that makes that decision to attack like a savage animal.

Imagine the stuff this criminal got away with when he was still active duty police officer.

Its a fact in this story that the wife just was not sure who threw the popcorn. That was a lie. She knew exactly who did what. Why lie? Was she ashamed that she knew her husband actually started the physical altercation? Yes, its silly and yes it was popcorn, but it is an action. Did he deserve to be shot? Was he really just texting the day care, not that it matters but hopefully that wasn't thrown in to garner some sympathy.

You never know when someone can snap. What if there was a woman who was laying around her house half naked, knowing there were men around there to get an eyeful, and she cries foul, gets the guy canned for looking at her for some reason, and it ruined his life and years later he saw the woman, marred by age, but still the same being, and he snaps and attacks her as revenge? These things happen Margot, you are right, it is utter trash, but thats life and one by now should not be so utterly mystified by reality.

I have no problem with anyone using their phone before the movie starts, but there are those that think the rules never apply to them. I think phone etiquette should be taught starting in Kindergarten all through high school. I get irritated at those that talk on them while they're paying for their groceries, or driving erratically in their cars. All 3 of my cars have bluetooth and it's still takes all of my concentration to talk, and I keep my conversation short and to the point if I have to use it.

Hard to say, but police officers are usually given the benefit of doubt by juries, and I think this applies to the case you mention

His whole forum thing is to just call everyone a lib because, apparently, he knows you better then you do apparently. In my short time on these boards posting, that's all I get from him.

Don't like something, call it a lib

Well...all the speculation is interesting but I think I will wait till all the facts come out before I make a call on this case.

According to some reports there was some sort of physical altercation before the shooting. If this is true then the scenario will dramatically change...especially in the eyes of a jury sympathetic to police. The perp was a retired Tampa Police Captain....this will go a long way in the eyes of a jury and juries invariably sympathize with the police.

Plus his age will also be a tremendous boost for his defense............the Jury no doubt will have many seniors on it...they will sympathize with a senior citizen 'threatened' or even possibly attacked physically as well as verbally by a much younger man.

Also most people that go to the movies have encountered rude people and how obnoxious and threatening they can be.

So this case is not black and white or open and shut as of now...many factors involved...it should be interesting to watch the trial...if it comes to that--the cop-- may cop a plea(no pun intended) if his defense team thinks his case is weak...but if he can convince the jury he felt his life was in danger...the jury will not convict.

Also it is not illegal to have a concealed weapon in a theater if you are properly licensed.

"Benefit of doubt" is one hell of a way to minimize it....

IMHO, armed "civilians" probably have more restraint than the average cop. In FL, police officers have committed more violent gun crimes per capita than have CCW permit holders.

What conversation? He was texting. Also, it was during the previews, not the movie. The previews are just commercials.

Totally agree. Can't remember the last time I went to the theater. To many crazies and to many rude, annoying people out here...

Reeves had to have been losing it and why no one noticed his diminished mental capacity to reason things out, I find surprising - particularly his wife, whom I noticed had nothing to say..... well, not yet, anyway........

A crying infant in a theater?! No, that should not be allowed. People pay $ to watch and hear a movie, not a crying infant..... don't blame you, but I would have gone to management instead of calling her a name b/c people like her, it wouldn't faze her in the least b/c she tho't she was entitled to disturb the other......

I just have to know what someone could find irritating about someone else TEXTING, (unless it was in a car, then it's very dangerous and the guy, being a former cop, might have said something about it out of a sense of civic duty), but in a MOVIE THEATRE?

I could see if they were talking, (not the shooting, but being irritated) and even if the phone rang, (again, I still don't see a shooting as necessary, even after popcorn was thrown.) but texting is utterly silent and in fact KEEPS the phone from ringing (I think).

I've been in many theatres where the announcement of "please turn cellphones off" in fact, seems a signal for many people to make a text, probably checking the babysitter like was happening here, before they turn it off. It seems to me it might be the more polite thing to do than disturbing the whole row by getting up to leave.

Then again he is 71 years old and a good candidate for dementia of several sorts. How wonderful it is that we don't require people to have a physical and mental exam annually to exercise their Constitutional right to own and carry a gun, like we do with recreational airplane pilots.

I heard of a cop on the news say that, and I have to believe that is true about how a jury views the charges. I have never had to serve on a jury, so I can't speak from experience

Not to ignore what he did, but this guy may have cancer, may have lost everything and everyone close to him, who knows? If any of that is true, he obviously was a walking time bomb, and didn't care about the consequences. Being in prison is one thing, being a cop in prison is another. His life from this point forward is over.

Agree and obviously there was something going on w/Reeves mental state that others who knew him either ignored or didn't notice..... cop or not, a sane, rationale person doesn't shoot someone b/c they're texting.......

As a CHL holder, you have a enormous amount of responsibility. Knowing when to shoot and when not to. If you are robbed and shoot, miss and hit a bystander, you will be charged with murder but hit your robber, you will get a pass. So target practice and proficiency is a must. Famous rule, if your red, then your dead, if your white, then your alright, meaning if you shoot in anger, then you will be charged but if you legitimately scared for you life or for a loved one, chances are you will not be charged. The old retired cop probably does not have a CHL and is aloud of have his gun because he is a retiree and have been extended the courtesy. As a CHL holder myself, I would never have pulled my gun over an argument unless I was physically assaulted or if my family was being assaulted or being robbed. If the victim never threw a punch, then the old guy is going down. All CHL holders, need to use their heads as the burden is on you to prove your justification for drawing and or shooting another human being. I feel sad about this whole situation, the fact will come out and we will all soon know the truth.

I also would to point out, knowing I'm armed, I would never start an argument over something trivial or anything major, you have to learn to cool you head and not get involved in argument. If someone engages you into a argument for whatever reason, its best to walk away. It better to walk away then have a argument escalate where you may have to pull your gun.

Curious question: do ccw holders have to take any training courses?
