Just got word my oldest son has been selected for Captain USMC. He came up through the ranks out of high school. Current on deployment in South Korea with his communications company.
Got 5 grandbaby's and don't expect anymore. Two moving back home soon as youngest son is getting medical retired out of the Corp next month.
Congrats. You mentioned he has been selected for promotion. In the USAF, the officers named for selection are placed on a promotion list in order of seniority. The actual promotion becomes effective when a vacancy opens the fiscal year following the year selected. I'm assuming therefore he's not officially promoted with Captain's bars yet. About 95% of O-2's make O-3 in the USAF. I'd imagine the USMC is a little more selective than that. My niece is an O-3 in the Army...and selection for promotions are always to be celebrated...it's up or out afterall. You really start to sweat O-4 and above selection boards, and the truly rarified air of officership begins at O-6...even the USAF begins to narrow the field at that point.
As I said he came up through the ranks, went to OCS at 34 years old as a Gunny. Finished second in his class and was able to "write his ticket". And yes just selected for promotion at this point.
