I think his point may be a hate crime is a crime and hate speech is speech. Crimes tend to be worse than speech, and whether you hate someone while speaking or committing a crime is rather irrelevant to whether you disapprove of crime or support free speech.

I suspect you are not familiar with what a hate crime is, it is not irrelevant at all whether hate of a group characteristic is involved or not - the hate crime wouldn't have happened without it. And, btw, the bar is quite high to prove that premeditation based on hatred of a group was there. It's always advisable to inform oneself about the actual legislation before spouting off (this is not directed at you, I realise you're interpreting someone else's comment)
You are correct in citing cultural differences however I strongly disagree with labeling folks by skin color for the simple reason that humans' skin color varies widely and is not always indicative of actual cultural differences. When it comes to 'culture' here in America, we should be all just one culture and that is American. I understand the horrendous legacy of slavery however, this country has shed the blood of its own in a civil war over just that issue some 150 years ago. Since that time, racism and discrimination have taken their toll on the majority of Americans who are 'color blind' when it comes to skin color. Most of US get along quite well regardless of our skin color or cultural origins BECAUSE we consider ourselves AMERICANS. ETHNIC differences have always been seen as an enrichment to our country BECAUSE folks from disparate areas of the world retain their ethnicity here in America WITHOUT trying to ultimately create their own, isolated 'state-nation' within its borders which can only divide a country.
