we have better things to worry about. responsible people keep children away from guns. will you be willing to suffer consequences if someone is killed because they couldn't get their gun ready to fire quickly enough?

It goes with the territory Ronny. Guns need to be at hand and loaded for self-defense.

Reasonable in principle, though I would add some provisions like a kid can take a safety course and be allowed access to guns at home.

However, how are you going to enforce this in a manner that actually reduces kids access to guns? Either LE has to take up the responsibility, time and effort and check on gun owners storing habits, with warrant in hand mind you, or we're just making a regulation that has no effect until after disaster strikes.

I'd say if they are above say 13 they can take such a safety course

this is true for bored children with paperclips as well. what prevents those who dont lock up their guns from claiming a kid picked the lock as a defense in court? also, what prevents already devastated parents from going to jail as a result of same?

why did you ignore AND OMIT the rest of my question?

this is why we have such problems making gun laws. An inability or unwillingness to address concerns of the law does not promote support for that law...

Is this before or after you and congress buys a ton of stock in companies that manufacture items being mandated by law to purchase? Sounds like a good way to get richer for those who have already gained 400% wealth while serving in congress on $174k a year salary.

still no indication as to how this law would be enforced, beyond sticking it to those folks whose children already got access to the gun...

are you trying to prevent disaster or just punish folks after the fact?

More kids kill themselves by hanging/suffocation than with guns. Are you going to require parent to lock up all ropes, cords, belts and bed sheets when they aren't around?

Depends on the situation and the gun. I keep my self-defense pistol always loaded (with a round in the chamber and a full magazine), but I also keep it in a combination lockbox. It's pretty safe that way.

Where did you make up this 2,000 number. Your newsweek article claimed 1297 a year for all firearms deaths in children, not just accidental shootings. the CDC's WISQARS database, when selected for children (age 0 to 18) said that there were 2240 accidental deaths by guns (total) in all years from 1999-2016. Why do you persist in these kinds of mistruths. Please read for comprehension.

Below is my WISQARS output that I got today.

And this kind of law won't suddenly make them responsible parents.

Also notice the steady trend of decline.

We could make new laws that will have negligible effect as they're unenforcible... or just let the trend continue to reduce.
