Retired Secret Service Agent Had Warned Stoneman Douglas About Security Failures By Lisa J. Huriash 6-8-2018 Two months before the massacre at Stoneman Douglas High School, a retired Secret Service agent warned administrators that the school could be vulnerable to a gunman. Wexler retired from the Secret Service in 2014 after 27 years with the agency. ~~~~~~~~~~~ He had offered in the past to make security recommendations. The district “finally took me up on the offer” in December when a teacher on behalf of the school’s security committee asked him to conduct a “site survey” of the campus. Was school security sufficient? they wanted to know. ~Snip~ Of the Stoneman Douglas administration, Wexler said: “I tell them what to do and then they don’t do it. If they didn’t want to use the recommendation, why then would the school reach out to me? “I said, ‘Keep the gates locked.’ If they just kept the gates locked the kid would have had to jump the fence and then it would have been more obvious. “It didn’t have to happen. Those kids didn’t have to die.” Source: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/b...cret-service-steve-wexler-20180605-story.html ~~~~~~ With everything that has come out since the unfortunate massacre, I think the Democratic Party and especially those Democrats in Broward County are responsible for the shooting so they could have martyrs to push their anti-gun program against the Constitution. Obama as leader of the Democrat Party are culpable with his "Keep Criminals in School" policy which they touted as a big success, but as the evidence has shown a failure. From day one many people (Dems) in the Parkland school system and local government have had a vested interest in making certain everyone screams for the NRA's blood and not theirs. I strongly suggest that readers go to the Sun-Sentinel article and read it. Meanwhile, Where has Debbie Wasserman Schultz been? What has she had to say about Broward Co school safety? What’s her plan for physical security? As Congresswoman she holds the federal purse strings. What’s she done since the airport was shot up?
I don't know about this. I'm going to be a teacher and have spent enough time on these campuses to know that they are all vulnerable. There are a few exceptions. Some districts have made agreements with local police to offer part of their campus as an off-site police location. Police regularly conduct their operations out of there, that's where they go to submit paperwork at the end of their shift, basically its a constant police presence in some cases 24 hours a day. There has never been a school shooting at a campus that has a police department housed there. And these aren't just cops patrolling, its where they work, 8 hours a day, they are armed, and they are trained. Some schools even allow K-9 units to be housed on their campus. The cost is also amazing because its been worked out that the money spent for housing them can be reduced from the police budget and given to the school. These are some of the ideas that can help make our children safer. Sticking a sign on a wall that says "no guns allowed" isn't working. It also allows children to become comfortable with police which will go a long way in their future relationships with them and this fear that many in society have of the evil police. When you get to see a cop everyday, and you guys learn each others names, it makes a huge difference in the outside world.
Your going to be a teacher. God love you and keep you safe. Been there, done that and personally I feel sorry for those kids trying to learn. But, I do wish you the best...
Thank you and its a struggle and I am so extremely nervous I can't even tell you. Having the responsibility of teaching a young mind something, and knowing the power of influence is almost daunting to me. What if I screw that up and fail them. And I don't even want to talk about dealing with parents who will be yelling at me. I just got my fingerprint card though so now I can pick what grades I want to teach.
The younger the better. Once you get to High School it gets real real challenging. Haven't hear of a kindergartener pulling a knife yet... Private or Public School
I haven't decided, I will be applying to both. I'm hoping I'm fortunate to get the choice between them.
