I disagree. It may be one of THE most selfish but not cowardly. A cowardly act would be like during WWII someone turns family members in to the gestapo { 3rd reich } in order to save their own skin.
Just finished the movie and one statement by Robins Williams as Sy struck me. Right at the end as he was being nabbed and being handcuffed he said : " I just took pictures " which was correct. To a point. Which takes me to this point of human analysis.Basically People don't change. Our character and personalities are set at around age 9 or 10. Maybe a little later for others.Just stop and think about those you knew in school and how much they changed from 5th grade onward.Probably not that much as far as disposition and temperament or ability to intermingle with others. Psychologically our personalities are set by around age 9,10 or 12. When someone enters high school their personalities are already in place. Meaning their core dispositions as to likes and dislikes and favoritism. With few exception.Going into Juvenile hall or detention may only aggravate that dispensation. I think there is a possibility that Robin Williams had demons from his youth that could not be wished away just because of his status as Hollywood Star. No human is exempt from such thoughts or demons. We all have cross to bear.No one gets out of life alive. The key may exist in how we deal with those cross and not let them try and overwhelm us. There may be humans who went thru their entire life without as much as a care in the world or one bit of dislike. But that would only be proof how removed from the human condition they truly were. Most all humans suffer and are tested in their lives. There is no truly safe sanctuary on Earth. At least not as far as grown up are concerned. No one gets out of Life alive. " The body is an affliction of the soul; it is Hell,Fate, a burden,a necessity,a strong chain, and a tormenting punishment. Why should I labor for naught, seeing how naked the end. " -- Palladas
Foolie: have you seen this? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_Greatest_Dad Btw: I think the parkinsons was the final straw.
Some of the callousness and lack of empathy on this thread reminded me of an old song that seems quite apt: Walk a Mile in My Shoes (edited down) If I could be you, if you could be me for just one hour If we could find a way to get inside each others mind... If you could see you through my eyes instead of your ego I believe you'd be surprised to see that you've been blind... Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes Hey, before you abuse, criticize and accuse Walk a mile in my shoes Now your whole world you see around you is just a reflection And the law of common says you're gonna reap just what you sow So unless you've lived a life of total perfection You'd better be careful of every stone that you should throw... Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes And before you abuse, criticize and accuse Walk a mile in my shoes
I've had (real) money problems like Williams (although 'money problems' for someone who has 3 movies set to come out, not to mention classics like Alladin that pay him to this day is hardly money problems like the average Joe faces) I've had marital problems I have wlaked a mile in his shoes..... being upset that life has hit a rocky patch or that it didn't end up the way you had previously envisioned is not a valid reason to off yourself. it's selfish, doesn't consider your loved ones at all.
Being judgmental and callous in our regard for those who suffer - and especially if / when we (arrogantly) set the benchmark / criteria for what 'suffering' is... goes toward making the stuff of human relationships even more fraught and precarious and fragile than they already are.
suck it up, or spit it out..... (a great term my wife said yesterday to me.... ) I made my choice, Williams made his.
While I agree, the good news is that most people are good and compassionate leaving the callous asshats as a small minority. In some ways they, too, should be pitied like those who suffer from depression. "The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all, May have been that his heart was two sizes too small."
Havan't seen but may rent.Sounds good.Williams was the prefect actor for such roles.I noticed something in - One Hour Photo -.Williams as Sy the Photo Guy mentions briefly about his growing-up as a kid. That he was Chubby, really chubby and sick a lot. If you go to Imdb in His Bio it also mentiones his difficulty growing up as kid. That he spent a lot of time by himself, in play acting mode.Because the other kids didn't like him due to being so chubby. And that is why acting seemed natural for him. He had to act out roles as a kid,out of lonliness and need for comnpanionship. That may also be why he was so good at standup. He had to as a kid, keep himself laughing to keep from being depressed. The reason Circus Clowns in real life are kinda sad and drink. Just my 2 cents.
Ive heard rumors about a bad childhood. I wonder if it was more than that. Im sure he used his fantastic imagination to escape then as he got older used drugs and alcohol to escape. Its all very sad. I only hope hes found some true mental relief. - - - Updated - - - ((((Big texas hug))))
Williams popped up on a few areas which didn't fit the normal profile for comedians. I think he did it for fun, not because he had to.
I liked his voiceover work.... I wasn't a big fan of that manic kind of standup comedy.... but I never had anything against Williams prior to his selfish final act. What I take exception to in this situation is 2-part. the first part is Suicide Now, I understand that there are times you are suffering from some terminal illness that I have never witnessed and obviously have never experienced personally. This one scares me. Watching a loved one suffer, or suffer myself as my body SLOWLY dies sound like it would test my resolve and faith But Williams did not have a terminal illness. Depression is not terminal. Parkinsons is not terminal.... money issues is not terminal.... marital problems is not terminal .... and now I am expected to hold my tongue because and celebrate him because he made me laugh in some of his work? I don't feel sorry for him, I feel sorry for his family and people who actually knew him because they may blame themselves for his selfish decision. the second part is the celebrity part people on this thread are acting like Williams was their father. You are not mourning this man.... he did not know you. His death is not more important than any of the other 100's of 1000's deaths that day
Sigmund Freud said " The goal of all life is death ". And postulated in his { Beyond the Pleasure Principle } 1920 " No neurotic harbors thoughts of suicide which are not murderous impulses against others redirected upon himself. " Did Williams indeed develop neurosis within his own acting clique. That somehow he wasn't measuring up and might fall into the age old Hollywood mold of Fading actor.Williams could play really happy and spirited roles as easy as introspective sad ones { like counselors }. Maybe Williams wasn't ready to slowly be put out to pasture as most ALL Hollywood actors face in old age. That would surely cause depression and maybe aggravated elevation of a progressive disorder like Parkinsons.
Some people have zero shame: http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140828/BUSINESS/140829598
Would it be too obvious of a devils advocate to point out that Robin Williams may have a point in committing Suicide.I mean, why stay alive in a society so filled with callousness and rank petulance. When very very few people in life will EVER be remembered at all past a couple generation. Stop and think about that. How many posters here ever talk and remind family members about a Great Aunt or Great Uncle.Even a Great Grandfather. Life is both extremely precarious and absurd. " for life operates, essentially and fundamentally by injuring, violating, exploiting and annihilating and cannot even be conceived of outside of this character. " -- Nietzsche
Why do you think our society is filled with callousness and rank petulance? I see loving and caring human beings every day. <<< MODERATOR EDIT: OFF TOPIC >>> When has that ever been different? Even those who are remembered are misremembered to the good or to the bad.
Dennis Prager { Talk Radio } said it best. That he loves his fellow man but not mankind.Because throughout History,Mankind has demonstrated repeated Inhumanity at every turn.Meaning one should strive to love his fellow man,but not trust in mankind as a whole.Because throughout Time immemorial, mankind has always managed to turn on man.
