    Ron DeSantis says he’ll end birthright citizenship as president

    Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday unveiled a sweeping plan to overhaul the nation’s immigration system and ramp up border enforcement, vowing to end birthright citizenship, “repel the invasion” at the U.S. southern border and use the “levers at our disposal” to ensure cooperation from Mexico.

    Good news and I'm curious as to how the other GOP candidates handle the birthright citizenship issue. But there were some other interesting things he's proposed.

    DeSantis pledged to end “catch and release” — the policy that allows migrants to be released into the U.S. while they await their asylum hearing — reimpose the so-called “Remain in Mexico” policy and finish Trump’s long-promised, though still incomplete, border wall.

    DeSantis also said that Border Patrol agents should be able to “respond with force” if they catch drug smugglers attempting to sneak into the U.S.

    Additionally, DeSantis said he would cut hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to so-called “sanctuary jurisdictions” that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration law, and deputize state and local governments to enforce immigration law.

    Addressing supporters in Texas on Monday, DeSantis pledged that, if elected president, he would look to enact at the federal level a version of a sweeping immigration bill Florida lawmakers passed last month that requires businesses with more than 25 employees to use E-Verify, a federal electronic system, to check the immigration status of new hires. The state law he signed exempts independent contractors and those who hire people to do house work, such as housekeepers, maids and gardeners.

    Among his other proposals: raising pay for Border Patrol agents, restricting visas of countries that don’t accept deportees and defunding nongovernmental organizations and other groups “engaged in facilitating illegal alien processing, human smuggling, and encouraging mass migration.”

    Check, check, and check.

    There is a lot to like in these proposals.

    You realize birthright citizenship includes people who are citizens because their parents are, right? It's not just about where you were born.

    You applaud this blithering idiot when he tells you to your face that he'll rip citizenship from your unborn kids and grandkids? Further, DeStoopid should know he can't do such on his own, that it would take a Constitutional Amendment to do that. I guess if you're dumb enough to eat pudding with your fingers, your view of US government might be a bit skewed to the simpler side.

    Good luck to him! Keep dreaming on that pie-in-the-sky and get out of the way while people who are focused on workable solutions get stuff done.

    That's a topic for another thread. If you want to start a thread on how the current Supreme Court has issued decisions that were in violation of the Constitution and the law, go ahead. It might make an interesting read.

    Right. There are historically two ways to obtain citizenship. These are called jus soli, and jus sanguine- Right of soil, and right of blood. Right of blood is when citizenship is transferred from parents to their children. Right of soil is a holdover from when everything born in the king's territory was subject to the king.

    The 14th amendment states that persons born in or naturalized to the United States, And under the jurisdiction thereof. So there are two requirements to be incorporated as a citizen under the the 14th amendment- born here, or naturalized, AND under the jurisdiction of the United States.

    So, DeSantis apparently wants only naturalized citizens if he's doing away with citizenship as a birthright. Meaning no one's kids are automatically citizens. I stand by my prior statements.

    Fair enough. I don't disagree. Desantis ain't as articulate as you or I. :)

    But is a kid that gets tossed over the river before the unbiblical cord is cut a citizen under the 14th Amendment? I don't think they are. The illegal immigrant is in the jurisdiction. They are not operating under the jurisdiction of the United States.

    I don't object to doing away with what you call jus soli. I object to doing away with jus sanguine. By what the OP is claiming, DeSantis wants to do away with both. Whatever Lil Mike's take on it.

    We couldn’t pass a constitutional amendment for term limits, even if most of the country wanted it. (We do.)

    Good luck getting the 14th abolished. No pregnant American woman close to her due date would be able to travel .

    Nobody said anything about abolishing the 14th amendment until you did. I'd like to see the 14th amendment enforced in its entirety instead of ignoring the inconvenient parts.

    There is no birth right of soil in the United States. The dirt of the earth does not confer citizenship. The idea that you and the dirt and everything on it belongs to the government is a dinasaur from the days of monarchy.

    Birthright citizenship is literally in the constitution. So, if following the constitution is the goal, then going against the constitution goes against the goal. Lol.

    Were you born here to citizens?



    If you were born here to American citizens then you are naturally a citizen. You were not incorporated under the 14th amendment. A Citizen of the United States is a citizen by statute. A natural citizen does not need a statute because a person is obviously and naturally a citizen if there is no other possible country they could logically be considered to be a citizen.

    No, it's not in the constitution.

    !4th Amendment. Very first sentence "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

    "Subject to the jurisdiction" applies to basically everyone in US territory except foreign diplomats, armies or sovereigns according to Chief Justice Marshall, Schooner Exchange v. McFadden [1812].
    I don't like the way it is, but that doesn't change it.
