A County Commissioner's meeting is probably a mundane event. And I'm sure invocations are just pro forma. But how far must we go to be inclusive:

That is the funniest thing I've seen in the year 2024 (Or, if you believe the Satanists from Rosemary's Baby, Year 58 )

When the video changes @ 22 seconds in, look at the woman in the audience... she is truly truly baffled at what she is seeing and hearing...

Then, at the end, when he finishes with Hail Satan!!, you hear 1 guy repeat it back, to stunned silence

Where is the Green Shirt Guy when you really need him??

Maybe we can get in satan we trust put on some federal buildings and across some money in the near future.

As a society we can either build a wall between church and state or we can allow all religions equal access.

If the county commission is going to open up with a prayer or something similar, then it should be all religions right including Atheists? It is not being inclusive, but the 1st amendment is really clear that there are no exceptions whatsoever.

    Atheism is not a religion.

As an atheist, I think that any religious rite or convocation or whatever they want to call it should be strictly prohibited at all government functions. If you need to pray before participating, do it in private.

Its not that different from a religion. The belief no higher power exists is no different than belief that one does. Its equally ignorant, and equally factless.

Correct. Atheism is, in effect, the absence of a religion…

So then if the absence of religion is atheism, by making religion absent in the public sphere, we are inherently endorsing atheism. So why should atheists have their belief system endorsed but I don't get mine?

If atheism isn't a religion then you have no protection for your non-religion right? In other words I can deny you service because you're an atheist right? Because it's not a religion. I can fire you for being an atheist because you have no religious protections because atheism isn't a religion. Right?

You can't have it both ways. Either it's a religion or it's not. If it is, then creating an atmosphere where no religion is allowed in the public sphere means our government is inherently endorsing the religion of atheism. And if it's not then you have no religious protections.

So which one is it? Is it a religion or not?

Atheism is NOT the "absence of religion"

Atheism is the absence of the belief in a God.

Theism is the belief in a God...no specific God...just that the person believes a God exists for whatever reason
An atheist does not believe in a God...mostly because evidence of the existence of a god from theists is not convincing to the atheist.

Well that is the crux of it, isn't it? Folks only want their particular brand of religion present.

So it is factless to say there is no god . . . and factless to say there is a god . . . You probably should have tried thinking about this a little harder before typing, because your position is a contradictory mess.

As with the last poster, you haven't thought about your position very much. The greeting card I bought my mom for her birthday does not endorse theism. That does not mean it endorses atheism. My dog's rabies vaccination collar does not endorse theism. That does not mean it endorses atheism. My lawncare bill does not endorse theism. That does not mean it endorses atheism. Try to think.

But he's totally right! My Neflix subscription does promote religion, therefore it promotes atheism! . . . right? What's additionally funny is that @TheImmortal doesn't understand that atheistic religions like Buddhism and Jainism and Satanism exist.

How about no invocation at all?

But if we must have them, seems fair to allow multiple viewpoints. To be clear, to these people Satan is a symbol and righteous rebellion to what they perceive as the evils/absurdity of Christianity, i.e. Satan only exists as a concept, nothing supernatural. So it's basically a philosophy that is in opposition to Christianity. It is kind of an irreligion and does not represent even a significant proportion of atheists, but if you must have religious bullshit in your ceremonies, it's only fair to include different viewpoints. If you don't want them imposing their beliefs on you, perhaps it's best to conclude religion (or irreligion) should not be a part of such public activities?

I'm fine with all or none. I'd prefer none, but if we allow one religion, we have to allow all.

What makes you think you know more about atheism than an atheist?

Atheism is, quite literally, the absence of belief.

    atheism noun
    1. disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.

    I prefer knowledge.

No ****. But if your lawn care letter states we have no belief in God. Then your lawn care company is endorsing atheism.

If your dogs rabies vaccination says on it "we have no beliefs in god" then your vet is endorsing atheism.
