A person carrying articles with both hands, or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impracticable, is not required to salute a senior person or return the salute to a subordinate.

Addressing saluting while holding a cup of coffee, it would only be improper to salute with any object in the right hand.

There is nothing that says the commander in chief should render a proper salute. It is optional and a sign of respect only. So if you are going to do it, do it right, or don't do it at all!

No he didn't render it properly. Having his hands full would have excused him. Attempting to do so anyway, shows he wanted too, but it looked extremely awkward and therefore made it unnecessary. This isn't brain surgery. A verbal acknowledgment would be just as respectful when hands are occupied or in place of a salute. Thank you/appreciate you soldier, would be just as proper/respectful.

Obama's approval rating in the military is around 33%, which is HORRIBLE seeing as though they signed up to serve under him. It's going to go way down.

My experience is that more than a few enlisted to do not maintain proper protocol either, as there are a few troops who refuse to salute company grade officers while in passing.

In my time in I only witnessed that one time. It was a girl in the DC National Guard who refused to salute our XO. It was her 3rd counseling statement in a month and she was gone, from what I hear.

I am not too sure on the statistics, but I believe that most humans, and Obama is nominally human, are born with two arms and two hands. Beings how Obama had a latte (actually I heard it was really a chai spiced tea with extra sugar and cream, latte being too manly a drink for Obama) in one hand and nothing in the other, I am not sure how difficult it would have been to switch the foofy drink from one hand to the other and give a respectful and proper salute. It seems to me a rather easy task, but competence hasn't been one of Obama's strong suits anyways.

Of course, if anyone thought Obama had anything but contempt and disdain for the people sworn to defend our liberties, then this would never be an issue.

I did it to every officer who was in proper uniform as a respect for the rank. If they didn't care enough to wear their hat or the uniform properly, the disrespect was theirs.

Who gives a (*)(*)(*)(*)? Right-wingers disrespect the office of the presidency every day with their antics, so their dishonest carping about respect is laughable.

BINGO! I think he knows better - no one can be that stupid. He's so full of himself and just plain doesn't care.....

It really shouldn't be a left or right issue, but one of proper respect for the office. The man is CIC and should lead by example. Sure, its not high on the current list of priorities, and frankly, I have bigger fish to fry with the man. But if you have discipline to handle the small stuff you may be ready for more, not the other way around.

This forum is littered with people who have no respect for the office and their words and actions prove it, so any whining about a lack of respect from those people is irrelevant.

    Interesting.
So conversely Obama should be considered irrelevant? OK.
