What a one-sided poll. But no, unless you work hard for it, you deserve what you have. The concept is too French to have real appeal.

I post on another site and had a brief encounter with a liberal who was angry about Indiana's new right-to-work legislation. They claimed something similar to this:

"Oh great, now the non-union workers will benefit from all of the perks that the union workers fought so hard for while doing nothing to get the perks themselves!"

Grade-A liberal hypocrisy, nothing more. I'm totally in support of everyone having equal opportunity for success, but everyone having equality of outcome is immoral and virtually impossible.

As usual the conservative misses the point, just as does the left-wing liberal. The goal is not to have equality of income but rather equality of percentage of income. What many people feel is that there should be a minimum standard of living (don't set it too high!) and then each person should keep roughly the same percentage of what they make over and above that low standard of living. Looked at that way, the graduated income tax system (without hordes of loopholes) makes sense.

Perhaps we should revise the tax code to reflect this. Say the first $5,000 is the minimum standard amount and put a 25% tax on everything over that, so someone making $15,000 would pay $2,500 and someone paying $35,000 would pay $7,500 while someone making $1.0005 million would pay $250k. You could call it the Minimum Standard plus Flat Tax system.

Equality of opportunity is a valid goal of government.

Equality of outcome, given equality of opportunity, is none of government's business.

YOU have to work hard to get YOUR piece of the pie. Your opportunity is there regardless of someone elses success. The purpose of goverment is to ensure an equal OPPORTUNITY not equal an outcome!

Imo, all taxpayers (except the very poor) should all pay exactly the same tax rates (income and capital gains) with NO deductions except for capital gains...whatever those rates are.

Definitely not. Only those who refuse to work are "entitled". Others would be described as "deserving". Liberals can have someone explain the concept to them.

Fish and money, surely you jest. Fishing limits are there for a reason to keep fishermen from endangering the eco-system. (Being liberal you should already know about that.) No one is entitled simply by being alive to have the same money or things as another person. You get what you work for or inherit...which BTW gets smaller each time the government places their hands in your inheritance.

If I break my back all day chopping wood and you sit on your duff, you are not entitled to any wood. Go chop your own! If you are elderly and can't, I will help you. If you are capable of working, but simply lazy, you get no wood unless you try to steal it while I sleep...if you try I will shoot you with my American made Smith and Wesson.
