Well hell's bells ya'll didn't get the goosebumps..now that has nothing to do with allergies.. The tearing up might but not the goosebumps..maybe I am coming down with a chill. The Texas warm days could cure that. Makes me want to go read an Elmer Kelton book.
One day I will post some of my photographs I have taken in Texas.. I just love Texas. Greatest state ever..

Okay, for all you wiseguys Southern gals that made fun of me yesterday about the watermelon rind preserves, I have a new one for you today.

    lol

Actually I thought of this yesterday, but didn't really know how to describe it. My Grandmother used to can this every Summer, and it is simply wonderful! It's not like katsup or sauce, but more like a jam or preserve (sweet). ...sweet but tangy.

Difficult to describe. Common in Sud Italia, but not sure about in the Southern U.S.. Have any of you guys ever tried it?

No, haven't heard of that but have you ever tried pepper jelly? Now that is something to write home about. Sweet and a bit hot..

No I've not Daisy, but it sounds like something I would like. I like spicy/hot foods, and the combination of a spice and mildly sweet is always good!

I've been racking my brain trying to think of the type of beans/peas my Grandmother would cook and would spoon some of the tomato preserves on top of........... can't remember.

Alls I remember is I really wasn't a big fan of shelling the things. Took forever, and they make your hands purple. But man! ... they were good when cooked.

She would make polenta cakes, and place one on a plate, then cover with the purple beans, and top with the tomato preserves. YUM! Was poor food I guess, but certainly delicious. ...and I miss it.

I bet Falena has had the tomato preserves before.

Of course you've heard of it, Daise... I knew what it was as soon as he described it. Sweet but tangy?

Chow-Chow -- my mama made a batch every summer.... gotta have it with pinto beans and fried taters.

Ange, ours is made with green tomatoes... not red. But I bet it's very close to the same thing.

    Luv it... small world. ;)

Something I'd like to mention to my friends here. Although it has nothing to do with food.

Some of you may have noticed a thread in the Help and Feedback room started by a member warning of a widespread computer virus in a couple weeks. Also offered was a link to take you to a site for a check of you computer to see if it was lurking in the background.

I am certainly not suggesting the member has intended anything nefarious, but I caution you guys not to click on things of that nature.

Literally millions of computers are infected via that means. ;)

Keep your computer updated, use current updated anti virus program, and common sense when surfing.

Anyway, sorry for the derailing. lol

Thx for the info, Ange. I've heard about checking your computer for some virus that's supposed to pop up in July... prob via email. But I didn't bite. Geesh, bet some of my email pals did, though. Here we go. :psychoitc:

One g/f on AOL got a virus and it emailed viruses to everybody in her contact list... which was HUGE... about 50 times a day. AOL finally had to close her acct to get rid of it. Man, I was glad to see it go!

I'm one for caution with things like that. Think about it... general public is really not that knowledgeable about computers. Spook folks by spreading word of a pending virus, suggest they visit site X for a free checkup... bam! got it. lol

Another one of my personal favorites (although privacy related, not viral) is... "See who may be searching for you!" Okay GREAT! Once you go to the site, give your information, no one was searching... but they dam sure can now! You just helped built/market the search site, and for free too. lol

Pepper jelly on cream cheese is wonderful and it is also good eaten with peas and butter beans ( two more favorite southern foods). Peas in the south is a must have for summer eating.

I'll have to try it. ;)

I make a sweet pepper relish and I also make a hot tomato picante sauce that isn't sweet..it is good with cottage cheese. The only thing I have made this year is red hot cinnamon pickles. My days are consumned with other things lately.

I've never attempted to can anything. Fortunately, I can usually find what I want that somebody else made!

DDT: The river pics look like the Big bend area..but the flat-land cotton harvesting looks like where I lived in W. TX...Gaines County, where their sign reads "Cotton is King in Gaines County."

This brought a smile to my face.

My Grandmother canned everything! Not sure Smartie if you've ever seen an Italian stove top, but needless to say, they aren't what Americans are accustomed to. 4 burners, but very very compact. Well, my GM was the proud owner of a pressure cooker (big enough to park a car in), and would use two burners under the thing.

Always scared the hell outta me, shaking and hissing, and would blow steam every now and again. I was little, and didn't know anything about cooking... but I knew if that thing got lose in the kitchen, it wasn't gonna be pretty!

Fortunately, I think she was actually about as afraid of it as I was, so she would always allow me to go outside, when it really got to taking on.

Okay, I think of the weirdest things. lol

BTW, Romney can get a lot of the American-Hispanic vote by using 'this,' as they say in baseball, as his "walk-on song' (as for batters walking up to the plate):

I've danced to this at every American-Hispanic wedding I've ever been to..it's a STD!!

(p.s. You dont even have to know how to dance, just bounce around to the music and flap your arms like a chicken!!)
