I didn't claim that Europe banned everyone from entering the continent. I have to wonder why you're changing the topic and making things up, and what are these meaningless simplifications for?
If you're seriously interested in how the virus has been spreading in the last few weeks, I'm sure there's plenty of reliable info out there and that excludes Trump's claims. The epicenter is still China.

The US air travel ban you seem to be so proud of didn't work, otherwise there wouldn't be any cases in the US. Didn't work for the US, didn't work for Italy. You made a false claim, Trump (as so often) made a false claim. Full stop.

 

We did ban travel, but many arrived here while China was lying about the seriousness of the epidemic

Well, I’m sincerely curious ... how did Europe have so many cases (exponentially more than the U.S.) if air travel was banned? I guess they came by boat or car.

 

There is a lot to be criticized about China here and their politics re this pandemic is despicable. My thoughts: the US has only two neighbouring countries, this is very different in Europe. Some countries have four, five neighbours and you can easily cross two, three countries in a few hours by car. So an infected person might travel through three, four countries in one day spreading the virus. Contrary to popular believe by many 'mericans, EU countries still have a lot of autonomy without Brussels interfering in their domestic affairs. In certain situations this can be a disadvantage, esp re communication.
Based on what I've read, everybody who was diagnosed with the virus had it in them for a week or two without knowing it and very likely infected others before feeling ill and seeing a doctor. You can be infected and the symptoms start appearing only after two weeks. One infected person can contaminate up to several hundreds without even realising that they have the virus.
Most countries in Europe are very densely populated. Italy is pretty much the size of Arizona with a population around 9 times bigger. The Netherlands are half (!) the size of South Carolina with 3,5 times more people. For a highly contagious virus this is paradise.
Pretty much all European countries are controlling their borders, their airports, their ports and EU external borders. Depending on where one lives, travelling is restricted. Regarding Italy, you might want to google "patient one", a 38-year old fit guy who seems to have been the "source." Felt ill, went to his GP who, unfortunately, detected the problem only after a few days during which it spread and infected maybe around a hundred others who then infect hundreds. The claim that European countries let it spread or didn't do enough is definitely incorrect.
