5'099 Americans contracted the virus today.
OK, continue. Just introduce yourself so that all your compatriots know you.

    Maybe a little different.

David Lat, Eyeing Hospital Discharge, Talks About His Battle and Donating Blood to COVID-19 Research.

Thirteen days ago, David Lat lay on a stark white hospital bed in Manhattan, getting oxygen 24 hours a day because his breathing had grown so labored. And he dared not look ahead too much, he said, as he faced up to his battle with a severe COVID-19 infection.

“I don’t know that I’m getting any worse,” he said by cellphone on March 18, speaking about his illness. “And at this point,” he said, “I’ll take it.”

Lat, the founder of the legal blog Above the Law, did not know that just two days later he would be rendered unconscious by medical staff, suddenly intubated, and hooked up to a life-preserving ventilator for the next week, as he fought to survive, and as doctors administered to him novel drug therapies that they hoped would work.

During his recovery, he offered vials of blood in hopes of helping doctors and scientists find a proven treatment for the coronavirus scourge.

On Saturday, March 29, Lat was transferred out of intensive care, not long after being taken off of the ventilator.

Early on Monday, as he slept, he said, a team of nurses turned off the oxygen he’d been continuing to get since coming off of the ventilator.

He was glad that they did it without telling him, he said, “because I think the oxygen had become a psychological crutch.”

And as of Tuesday late afternoon and evening, as was able to breathe on his own “fine … as long as I don’t exert myself.”

“My heart rate still tends to spike over 100 even for something as simple as walking 15 feet to the bathroom,” he added. “But that’s to be expected given what I’ve been through over the past three weeks.”

His voice has been “very hoarse from the vocal-cord damage from being intubated for six days.”

“I try to speak as little as possible,” he said. He still had a “low-level cough” that is “probably not a true coronavirus cough but a so-called ‘follow-on’ infection.” Plus he has “all sorts of things—heart rate monitors, IV drips—still stuck into me.”

During the week that he was intubated and having a ventilator do his breathing for him, he said, he was “pretty much totally out of it.” Doctors and nurses heavily sedated him for the week, as they administered one drug therapy after another.

“In the end,” he said, “I ended up receiving an IL-6 inhibitor called Kevzara, a combo of the antimalarial drug called hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic called azithromycin, an IL-6 inhibitor called Tocilizumab, an IL-6 inhibitor called Clazakizumab, and an antiviral called Remdesivir.”

Oover the past couple of days, doctors have taken vial after vial of his blood, he said, and thanked him repeatedly for it. NYU Langone is running a study on the plasma of coronavirus patients in an effort to find an effective treatment for a deadly viral scourge that has no proven, effective therapy.

If he is discharged on Wednesday, said Lat, it will have been 25 days since he first started having symptoms, ranging from intermittent fevers to joint aches, chills, fatigue and coughing, and then, by March 15, heavy labored breathing that forced him to get to his nearest emergency room right away.

So, does that sound like any "flu" you have ever had are ever known anyone to have?

    This isn't the flu.

If the president wanted it over and done with quickly, he could follow and project the advice of the CDC, he could lead America toward providing what hospitals need, he could tell the people the truth.

BUT, he has NOT followed that route.

I absolutely agree that some of the advice may not apply to every individual.

Around here, apples aren't bought in bags. They are hand picked by the shopper. They were placed in the display individuallly by an employee. The shopping public is free to hand select what they choose.

The same goes for almost all fruits and vegetables.

Absolutely. So many fruits, vegetables & breads were touched by several hands along the way. Who knows how many Ariana Granday types are out there just randomly touching things, smelling them, licking them, putting them down. Some people are sick and twisted. We have to always assume one of those jerks touched anything open. This applied long before COVID, though. Before COVID, I had absolutely no clue how many people never washed their hands. I'm stunned the world needed a "how to wash your hands," class.

It's amazing what some people do.

Recently someone who scoffs at COVID care went around the veggie section and sneezed on the displays.

She got arrested. The grocery store had to dump about $35,000 worth of veggies (for the obvious reasons of retail sales).

She looked somewhat humble in the picture of her in the police cruiser!

Yeah. I posted that story. It breaks my heart.

Sometimes, I really think we should let natural selection have a bigger role in society.

This forum is littered with supposed adults talking about how they are partying, hugging, kissing, blah blah - because this is just another normal flu. You can't fix stupid, and those of us that understand sure are paying the price for their stupidity. Sigh.

The thing to do is to modify your own plan and strategy to account for all of that, as best you can. Of course, there is no guarantee of survival even with the best laid plan, never was, never will be. But you may be able to increase your own odds.

We're being a little OCD, here. Our 21-year old skipped out on us yesterday and went into a friend's care and over to his house. That boy stripped naked in the backyard, left his clothes outside and went straight to the shower without touching anything on his way. Dad ensured that. It's hard to keep the kid, down. Understandable, but damn - his ancestors were sent out of the country to fight wars when they were 18. He can sit in the house for a few weeks. Buck up.

And the Gov. of FL still wants to allow large worship gatherings? Wow. :smh:

Why are Republican Governors facilitating the SPREAD of the Virus?

I've been a fan of this governor since he took office. That is, up until this. I'm so disappointed and disheartened.

He needs to reverse that order.

NO Religious Large Gathering Services. Period.

When I say "no different," I'm talking about the fevers, the chills, the coughs, what one typically experiences with influenza. The difference is this is a respiratory ailment. And that's how it kills.

I'm no fan of Republicans, but faith is essential in times like this. Churches, synagogues, mosques, they should be considered essential just as much as the grocery store is considered essential. You don't need to be fearing large gatherings as long as they can be handled correctly.

If you wanna practice being overkill, that's your freedom. If you weren't scrubbing your place top to bottom before this outbreak, and you were going to the grocery store regularly, there's no reason to now. But again, if you want to practice being overkill and wipe down your cereal boxes with Lysol, be my guest.

That's why you rinse them off first. It's amazing how much filth I've seen come off in the sink just from rinsing strawberries.

Even if these gatherings help SPREAD the Virus?

These large religious gatherings NEED to be shutdown. Period.

Yep, this virus has barely tapped into it's potential hosts, but it definitely will so long as people are being half assed about it.
