In retrospect, I was lucky as a kid concerning my similarly built principal giving me swats. I was a 60# kid in middleschool.... TINY..... that man could have batted me through the brick wall if he wanted to, but he had to take some off of it when he gave me swats. Well, he took too much off of it apparently, because swats to me were nothing.....

at the time, I thought I was just that bad ass..... it wasn't until much later I realized why they didn't hurt. So I took swats over detention any day of the week

Kids from the 60's on back would get a face full of palm by their parents for acting up too, and it taught them to respect their elders. Last time I popped any of my boys was about a year ago when two of them were trying to beat the hell out of each other. My kids are raised to always be courteous and say ma'am and sir, please and thank you. Sometimes my youngest will forget and he'll say "Yeah" to my question, but before I can say anything he'll immediately say " I MEAN YES SIR!"

Next time, I'll reward them all with a piece of candy, or ten.

I don't know how you do it... I really don't. I can't stand fits being thrown by kids, but with your class being special needs, I'm not sure what I would have done. You definitely need patience.

Has nothing to do with the First Lady other than the fringe right's obsession with her and her body.

no, the trick is, give them candy everytime they DON'T fight... lol

I always refer to the running across the road theory on giving swats....

if my 3 yo runs across the road without looking first, I pop his ass......

I would rather him associate pain from my hand busting his ass when he can't understand that running in the road is dangerous and why, than getting hit by a car

Sticking a fork in an electrical outlet... same thing..... pop him quickly, that way he dosen't have to get electricuted to understand everytime he does it, he feels pain.

I never condone beating a kid because he can't ride his bike or anything...... if you spank too much, it's ineffective, but there are absolutely times a good swift pop on the shorts is warranted.

If the teacher broke the rules, then she should just be given a swat on the knuckles with a ruler and be done with it.

    Fines just coddle them.

No doubt... If my kids are giving my ex problems, she calls me and I get on the phone with them. They immediately straighten up. I have zero tolerance with kids that throw hissy fits or disrespect adults.

Which could possibly (although doubtful) explain why this lady and her box of candy is in a bit of hot doodoo. Positive reinforcement works, but it is morally questionable. Instead of asking who your favorite teacher, it could be which job a student might like. Anybody that answers "I want to be a marine!" gets a candy and a pat on the head.

That said, I learned how to do the multiplication tables thanks to the three musketeers and bingo cards. Every kid that scored a bingo got a small candy bar, It was a highly effective technique.

I feel for ya. My kid has a neurological problem that caused him to have meltdowns at school and at home. Back in the day, my dad would have whopped the neurological problems out of me, these days the kids can't be swatted, talked down to, humiliated, or anything like that - or at least that's how it was in California where my kid grew up. You probably heard about this, but it's child abuse if two parents have an argument in front of their kid. I'm telling you, California was tough because in order to raise my kid the way my parents raised me I'd be risking going to jail and having CPS take the boy away.

The good news is that, once the Docs got the right meds in the right doses, the kid got better. The bad news is that just one of those meds jumped to $912 in January.

When kids are allowed to say FU to a teacher and there are no consequences then why would a teacher even care any more?

Last November or December I heard a noise upstairs and when I went to investigate it was my son wrestling with my wife on the ground - this was very serious. I immediately jumped in and grabbed the boy and was ready to knock his teeth out when my wife jumped on me and told me not to escalate things. 5 minutes later she called the cops and my kid was hauled off for the night. When he got out they made appointments for him to go to counseling and do like 5 or 6 full Saturdays of community service. Nothing changed. I should have knocked his teeth out.

Here's the problem, you will never, ever have a home that is always 100% free from anything a kid can stick into an AC socket. Your method of proper parenting has the kid learning nothing. Javis has a method where the kid learns a behavior which the kid will apply even when no one is around.

Caring isn't the job. Ever see that stupid movie with Robin Williams where he's got students standing on desks and ripping up their textbooks? As soon as that happened, he should have been bumrushed out of the classroom and charged with vandalism of school property. Lord save the kids from teachers that care.

If a student F bombs the classroom, you suspend the kid and have a talk with the parents, explaining that any more profanity will result in an expulsion. You don't take that home with you after work and wonder how you could have helped. You really don't care what happens to that kid because caring isn't part of the job.

I still have a poster of a baby seal that I got for winning a spelling bee in 1985 when I was in the 1st grade.

    Hey, check this out:

Texas student fined $637 for cursing in class
    By Valerie Strauss
A suburban Dallas teenager who cursed in class was fined $637 and is working as a waitress to pay the debt.

The episode began last fall at North Mesquite High School. Senior Victoria Mullins, 17, was in class when, she said, “a kid who is really obnoxious” started to bother her, according to the Dallas Morning News.

According to court records, teacher Michelle Lene heard Mullins say “you trying to start [expletive],” and Lene reported her.

Mullins received a ticket for breaching the peace by cursing, and was originally fined $340 though, later, a $100 penalty was tacked on when she failed to up for a Nov. 18 court hearing.

Then another $50 was added when the city issued a warrant for her arrest Jan. 21, and on top of that, $147 as a collection fee.

Mullins said the whole class couldn’t hear her and she didn’t know why the teacher was offended. She didn’t show up for her court hearing, she said, because she didn’t have the money to pay the original fine.

Now she’s working as a waitress to make enough money to pay the debt.

Fining kids for swearing: Good idea or bad idea?

Nothing? I will say that they would not learn that your parents hit you because they failed as parent.

You should have knocked the teeth out of your own child?

Seems like an odd thing to regret not having done.

This is more indicative of bringing law enforcement into the schools for punishment. She wasn't fined under school code, she was fined under the criminal code, which is insanity.

There is a growing trend of treating school disciplinary issues as criminal offenses.

    From the linked article:

"“The principal gave me a lunch detention and told me to watch my mouth,” Mullins said.

Meanwhile, the school resource officer was contacted. :wall::wall::wall::wall: :thumbsdown:When Mullins got to her next class, the officer presented the 17-year-old student with the ticket."

Failed? It's a parent's job to teach. A swat on the rear will hardly cripple a kid. My cats learned to not walk on our kitchen counters because when they did they got squited with water. Now you can't if get one to go up there if you wanted to.

Of course not. It's an expression, a phrase.

A terrible idea! Being able to attend school is a privilege, and taking that privilege away should be enough of a disincentive. Fining students for exercising their first amendment rights will very quickly become another way for the state to balance its books. If a school district is short a few dollars, just expand carlin's 7 words to 8.

Whacks are always gonna consider that as child abuse, but I consider it discipline. I bet my didn't have to pop me more than 5 times when I was a kid. And he'd rip his belt off so fast that it popped his belt loops as it came out. Funny how the disciplined kids feel the way we do, but those that weren't are the ones that argue against personal responsibility.

I have a 4 month old Australian Shepherd that already knows to lay down, sit, be nice, and go to bed when told. A rolled up paper taped up and a light pop to the butt has made her a very smart cookie. She even goes to the door and whines when she has to go outside. Discipline.
