Kiplinger is an investment magazine with a readership skewed towards the very wealthy. Prefixing the "retirees" with "very wealthy" might be a start, but for the average American, the list is garbage.

Examine their 4th selection, for example:

Gee...how many retirees have a taxable income of $250,000 or more or some large estate that might be taxed? Your average retiree's income is usually confined mostly to Social Security. Somewhat better off middle class Americans might have modest IRAs that supplement Social Security. If a Roth, withdrawals are tax-free. With the little remaining from a traditional IRA, deductions and exemptions might eliminate their income tax burden. Compared to states with a sales tax and higher fees, this would make Oregon one of the best states to retire in, for the 99% that is.

Goes to show you how out of touch with middle America the wealthy elite and those who write for them are.

Even for the very wealthy, their analysis if a bit off. The 11% rate for high incomes was a temporary measure approved by voters to help close the budget gap from the Bush recession. It worked, and the rate is dropping to 9.9% in 2012. Seems odd that any analysis of retirement would include such a temporary measure.

Looks like it took some major effort for a 8th grader. We are proud of you.

This has been peddled for years. Mass gullibles, excluisvely liberal, have actually believed it. Surprise. The link in the OP should gve you a hint, but it's hard to see the truth when drinking the kool aid. Expenditures include Medicare, Social Security and other expenditures for RETIREES. And as the OP shows, red states are far more likely to be retirement states. So all your graph shows is exactly what the OP shows. :ignore:
