Generally, the way it works is you apply to a school. They accept you only if you have the grades to be accepted. Unless, you are one of those lucky persons who doesn't have to study to get good grades, that takes hard work. After you are accepted, you have to figure out how to pay for it. Having a wealthy family gets you past this last hurdle, but not he first hurdle.

 

If you're in the top 10% of your class you're going to get plenty of consideration.

If you're right at the top of your class plus you were captain of the basketball team and played wide receiver and cornerback you're going to get special consideration as a high achiever.

If you graduated from any Jesuit prep school you're going to get special consideration because the academic regimen is so tough.
