Does anyone like the Daily Show? I used to like the Daily Show because I thought it expressed the truths no one else wanted to hear, and did it in a funny way. However, with time, I grew disillusioned. The Daily Show is merely entertainment and it is also one that feeds off of the partisan rivalry between Democrats and Republicans, providing a alcove for smug Democrats to sit back and sneer at the other side. If Democrats were a kingdom, the Daily Show is its court fool and though you may glean bits and pieces of information from the show about the political theater we so love to criticize, if you were like me, you'd be the fool to calibrate yourself of what it says.
It really doesn't market itself as anything other than entertainment, which is why it's on a comedy channel and not a news channel. I don't catch it that often, but it tends to be accurate in calling out the bull in politics, and it even does it on both sides. It's just that the right has a lot more bull to call out.
The Daily Show is comedy. (it is on the "Comedy Channel) If you want crap look at CNN, MSNBC, and FOX. That is where the real crap shows reside. They like to call themselves news channels. But that is too narrow. They are political minutia channels and little else. They are not to inform. They are there to form public opinion and are bad for any society.
I haven't really watched the Daily show that much but I do find Jon Stewart funny on the times I've seen him. Though if anyone actually watches it for informative news then they should really get some priorities since they obviously didn't see the part that it was ment to be comedy entertainment taking a funny slant on current events and this is all I've ever seen it claim to be. Now Jon Stewart may think of himself more highly than that and some of his fans do but I can hardly criticize him for being confident on camera.
I find him funny at times as well, and I actually respect some of his opinions very much. At the same time, I remember agreeing with O' Reilly (perhaps one of the few things I agree with him on) when he said that Stewart wanted to be a political player that uses his show to influence politics, but dodges the accusation by saying it's just comedy. I think it is both. He wants to influence the political field and I think its obvious. But he comes across to me as a partisan pretending to be bi=partisan or independent of either. While I do say that Republican's generally have more aggressive campaign tactics, Democrats are not the under-seige do-gooders they pretend to be either and he attempts to cut generally lampoon one side and champion the public to another using comedy as a medium. He's influential, he knows it, and politicians know it. The O'Reilly Show is not news either, but many people view it with that interpretation and it leads to a lot of misleading. I don't really hate Stewart, but I don't see him as the "clear voice with a satirical bite" that I used t. I think he's just another political player and his act is no mere and innocent comedy act.
Well he is stating his opinion on things and obviously his comedy routine does come from a liberal bias as with comedy you have to be opinionated. Also like I said he does obviously think highly of himself but he does have influence as since he is saying opinions at times he should be called out when he's wrong just like anyone else. Though it's hard to criticize jokes based on facts since jokes are just meant to be taking a situation and finding that comedy side of it.
That's the whole point. I love the Daily Show even though 90% of the time I think the message is nonsense, just because Jon Stewart is funny. People who use the Daily Show for 'news' are really no different than those Republicans the left loves to poke fun at, who use Rush Limbaugh as their only 'news' source. If you want news, go read news. The Daily Show is meant to be humorous and nothing else - if you expected to find 'real news' in a left-wing comedy show then that's your problem.
You mean as opposed to O'Reilly who nothing more and a mouth piece for the Right dodging the fact that his show is so biased that it has NOTHING to do with REAL news and everything to do with a huge propaganda machine that entertains the masses of Fox News zombies? Well, I rather have an intelligent, humorous entertainer pointing out the total disconnect between "news" and "reality," and taking a few shots at the ridiculous stand of Faux News propaganda. Yep! I think Jon Stewarts is amazing in terms of putting the stupidity of the Right (and sometime the Left) in a palatable and concise fashion. . .all the time USING REAL FACTUAL DATA AND VIDEOS that demonstrate the reality of the Political games that are being played!
