His plan was to focus on those who are newly entering the US, knowing that would not reduce the total number in the US. But, it WOULD help the number not to grow, and those newly crossing represented a far easier target than those embedded in our population. So, it didn't have as many difficulties, it didn't involve depriving various corporations of the labor they (claim to) need. And, it was cheaper than other plans, thus not requiring money that congress refused to even discuss on purely partisan grounds.

So, his plan could be relatively simple and he had the budget for what he did. Congress wasn't about to give him more money, because he's a Democrat.

You'll remember that those pointing to the numbers as a success were ridiculed on the grounds that the numbers of deportees was "inflated", because new entrants are easy to find and deport.

So, he had chosen a different plan. And, the different plan had different results, costs, and limits.

In particular, his plan did not address the 11m who are embedded in our society - a problem that is not the same and poses significant difficulties.

The companies should be fined, per our laws.

UE is at all time lows, or near, right now.
    So, not a good argument.

Spending billions to build, and hundreds of millions thereafter, and HOPING it works?
See how bad the idea is?

So arrest the illegal, arrest the employers who hire them. Go to jail when caught.
    No wall needed.

At the time of the bi-partisan immigration reform bill it was determined that we would need to do significant work to e-verify and write laws enforcing its usage before employers could be held responsible in any real way.

I haven't heard that e-verify has been fixed since then.

Part of the problem is the SSID database, I think.

But, I agree. Part of e-verify must include policing of employers with penalties sufficient to cause them to comply.

Since you've already stated that you want amnesty, why do you care if there is a "plan" or not? Then you get your wish, the illegals get to stay. It's clear you don't believe illegals will leave without a plan so you should be fine with the situation. I think your notion is ridiculous, but time will tell.

The right wing was adamant that we stop the growth of the number of undocumented aliens before taking any other step.

Yet, when we STOPPED the growth in undocumented aliens 10 years ago, Republicans have failed to live up to their deal.

In fact, when we put together a bi-partisan reform bill (using standard congressional committee methodology with full Republican participation when Dems had a Senate majority and Repos had a House majority) the Republican party killed the bill in the House where it would have passed due to Republican representatives participating - a purely partisan move by the House Speaker.

NOW, we see Republicans going back on their deal to demand we spend tens of billions MORE on the wall - billions of tax dollars for which there has been no statement of justification.

We HAVE stopped the growth in the number of undocumented aliens here.

We have NOT moved on to dealing with the issues related to 11M people being here without representation, without a legal right to work to pay their own way, without any plan to screen those here for tax debt, crime or work record, without any plan to find and deport those we really need to deport, without a plan on solving the labor needs in agriculture and a few other sectors that have proven to be tough to solve.

The reason is that Republicans are not living up to their promise and are blocking those solutions by proposing to waste BILLIONS on a wall, without even bothering to write a justification.

We still need what is present in the bi-partisan immigration reform bill. Nothing has changed that.

I don't recall that particular demand. You say the "right wing" demanded that we stop the growth of illegals? That was the RW demand, just stop the number from rising and then then...what amnesty?

Well it didn't take long for you to get back to the typical leftist dishonest treatment of immigration. I figured that one post was enough.

    And then what???

And, then all the other things we need to do.

Have you read the bi-partisan immigration bill?

There have been several but if you mean the 2013 S 744, yes I did read it. It's a stinker and I'm glad it never got a vote in the House.

Well, and end tax welfare for illegal immigrants:

Republicans cutting $23 billion gift to illegal aliens

I do not like tax credits going to criminals.

Republicans rein in a reward to people who enter the United States illegally.

The new GOP tax overhaul would strip illegal immigrants of the ability to claim several major tax credits, saving the government $23.1 billion over the next decade. For years Republicans have complained that despite a general ban on taxpayer benefits flowing to illegal immigrants, the IRS has allowed them to collect the child tax credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Many illegal immigrants pay taxes using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, which the IRS issues to those who aren’t authorized to work in the U.S. The IRS pays out billions of dollars a year in tax credits to people filing using ITINs each year, according to the agency’s inspector general. The inspector general has repeatedly urged the IRS to stop making the payments, but the agency has refused, saying it interprets the law related to those tax credits to cover illegal immigrants as well as other taxpayers.

Stripping away this tax credit removes an incentive to come here -- or to stay.

More than 200 MS-13 members were arrested in a major Trump administration gang sweep.

Morocco had a problem with illegals infiltrating, and so Morocco built a 1,700-mile wall to keep them out. And Lefties didn't say squat!

The fortifications lie in uninhabited or very sparsely inhabited territory. They consist of sand and stone walls or berms about 3 m (10 ft) in height, with bunkers, fences and landmines throughout. The barrier minebelt that runs along the structure is thought to be the longest continuous minefield in the world.

It's ugly, of course, Trump's wall will be beautiful!

You'd be hard pressed to find liberals criticize, if not outright hate, any countries except Israel and the United States. The best way to stop illegals from coming here is to have American liberals tell them how much this country sucks and how racist and oppressive it is.
