Initially, almost everyone in Ukraine spoke Russian. But then the Communists came...

In order to appease local rulers and stabilize local power, the Bolsheviks in April 1923, at the XII Congress of the CPSU (b), proclaimed a policy of korenization aimed at replacing the Russian language and culture in the Union republics with the languages and culture of representatives of national minorities. It was served under the slogan of fighting the same Great-Russian chauvinism that was associated with Russia's imperial past. The main denouncers of Great Russian chauvinism and supporters of Ukrainization were Grigory Zinoviev (Radomyslsky), Nikolai Skripnik (Skrypnik), Nikolai Bukharin (before the revolution he lived under the name Moisha Dolgolevsky) and Joseph Stalin (Dzhugashvili). The participants of the congress quite consciously and persistently supported Ukrainian culture as opposed to Russian culture. Officials who did not speak Ukrainian were instructed to learn it within a year, otherwise they would be fired.

The Ukrainian media played an important role in the success of Ukrainization. If at the beginning of the process there was practically no press in Ukrainian, by 1933 373 out of 426 periodicals of the Ukrainian SSR were published in Ukrainian. Their total circulation exceeded 3.6 million copies, which accounted for 89 percent of the total number of print media.

The de-russification of Ukraine in the 1920s was so ridiculous that, for example, in Odessa — a Russian—speaking city - signs at the post office were allowed either in Ukrainian or in French. Such actions caused not only bewilderment, but also a sharp rejection of citizens. Russians felt like strangers where generations of their ancestors lived.

Immigrants *should* have an obligation to learn the common language of the society they're immigrating to. Are these Russians 'immigtants'? I mean, did they move to Ukraine ...or did Ukraine move to them? As I understand it, parts of Ukraine have ethnically been Russian since before Ukraine (or Russia ftm) were even formal nations. I dont see a lot of obligation for people who live in an area to change their customs just because that area comes under new management. You could force them, I spose, which used to becommon practice in such situations, but nowadays thats typically considered uncivilized. If you want them to change their ways, introduce them to a better way. If its truly better, they'll adopt it on their own eventually.

    Why?
if all nations learned German instead of Russian, all would be rich
do you want Ukrainians to learn both Russian and Polish?
    you are a Ukrainophobe

Russian is some "pzdek" language....mixture of Polak,Ukrainian,...not a true Slavic language.

    "Russia" derives from Finnish.

Why do you have to begin answering the question by asking its opposite question? Is it because you cant answer the actual question, but dont want to say so?

    Try to answer the question:
What are the advantages of the Ukrainian language?

if there is a European Union, then the Russian language does not exist
English and German are spoken in the European Union
    they don't speak Russian
Europe is the most developed continent in the world

Why do you think eastern Ukrainians are incapable of understanding that? Isnt it possible that, rather, they dont see that as being an 'advantage' like you do? Perhaps they just dont much care for the EU.

You learn about another culture and language.

    What's the advantage of Russian?

Learning about another culture an language are benefits of learning another language in addition to your own. That would apply to both Russians learning Ukrainian and Ukrainians learning Russian. Is that what you're talking about?

The rest of the world doesnt revolve around Ukrainian either. This is starting to smell like a 'why its OK to hate Russians' argument...

My impression is that you are trying to convince this forum that Ukrainians want to force all Russians who live in Ukraine to make Ukrainian language as their native.
I live in the US - each ethnic group is allowed to use their ethnic language as their native languages - in the US many sites or telephone help lines are in Spanish and in NYC there are many signs in Chinese, Spanish, Russian and other languages. The Russian propaganda is that Ukrainians want by force to make Russians - Ukrainians. I remember in Florida I visited Chinese restaurant where Chinese waiters spoke only Chinese and Spanish.
Anyone must be free to use at home or between their friends any language they want and of course they need to know the official language of the country in which they live.
