It's improper to compare the Canadians with the Vietnamese because of the huge size of Canada.

Vietnamese are different as their mentality are influenced by xenophobia, inferiority complex, Sinophobia and history of a thousand years of Chinese rule.

If Martin Luther King, Jr. was Deng Xioaping, the memorial would have been carved on the Chinese side of Mount Everest.

Your slander of the Vietnamese is so typically Chinese. Chinese arrogance regarding the Vietnamese has always struck me as strange. There is very little difference between the Cantonese and Tonkinese, but the Cantonese are viewed as being fully Han.

Maybe so, but Deng was too practical to want grand memorials.

You seem to be unable to differentiate a goose from a duck or a sheep from a goat. If an illegal Vietnamese immigrant slips into Hong Kong, Guangzhou or any other parts of Guangdong, he will not be able to communicate with the locals in Cantonese. Neither can the Cantonese communicate with him in Vietnamese.

I am perplexed by your claim that there is little difference between the Cantonese and Tonkinese. In other words, you claim that they are the same and one people. Most probably, US film companies have always employed American Chinese, who are mostly Cantonese, to act as Vietcongs in Hollywood movies.

This is because when it comes to minority actors, especially Asian, they are always in a short supply. Especially if you are looking for one as a main character (instead of just being in the background).

I remember in the 1980's when the original Ninja Turtle movie was being filmed in North Carolina. There were casting calls going out up and down the east coast, trying to find enough Asians. And when the 1963 Charlton Heaston movie about the Boxer Rebellion 55 Days at Peking was made, they hired just about any Asian they could find. Because of this, almost every Asian restaurant and other business was closed for months due to lack of employees. This casting call went out throughout all of Europe, from Spain and Italy to England and France.

And one of the earliest Asian-American actors of note is George Takei. Although of Japanese descent, he has played just about every Asian race, from Vietnamese and Japanese to Chinese. The same with Pat Morita.

This is not done from ignorance, as much as the fact that there are very few really good Asian-American actors. And those that have made a name for themselves (Pat Morita, George Takei, Gedde Watanabe, Lucy Liu, Tia Carrere) are almost always in high demand.

My family has members who are Cantonese and Tonkinese. The Tonkinese are a little less round headed, but otherwise pretty much indistinguishable from the Cantonese until they speak.

Given how minorities are treated in China, this was an absolute travesty.

The Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King was a great civil rights leader and he would be appalled at the treatment that minorities are receiving in China.

The Memorial SHOULD HAVE BEEN done in America ... as an American creation and dedication .... the statue SHOULD HAVE BEEN carved by an African American sculptor (or at least an American who agreed with King's progressive views) AND it should have been carved in a non-negative, non-confrontational way that would have give due and proper respect to the 'man of peace" and love and warmth and unity that he was while he lived..

Hope the so-called "little less round headed" Tonkinese will become well-rounded human beings after living in southern China for some years as illegal immigrants.

First of all, you should be reminded of the subtle treatment given to minorities in the US.

Just like the US or any country, the value of anything from China has nothing to do with ethnic minorities. For example, foreign museums, organizations and individuals are eager to get hold of any genuine antiques that are smuggled out of China.

There may be another memorial in waiting for another "man of peace" in your country. Don't forget your president is another Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Hence his future memorial, if any, could be carved entirely in the way you hope and plan for.
