You might want to look up Hesuchios/Hesuchia which is the actual Greek word that was used. Because of the complexity of the language there are difficulties in translating this language into English which is why there are so many misconceptions about the Bible.
There are several instances where similar words of the language are translated "conveniently" by man throughout the Bible.
In most places where this word was used it meant "peacefulness" Why then did it get translated into silence in this particular case??? Because it was convenient for men to do so.... Look 9 verses ahead of your verse and you will see the word was translated as peaceful.

I agree faith can be hazardous.... but what you fail to see is you have faith yourself... You don't even realize it.

Sure, I have faith in ideas that are based in reality. It is a form of faith we all exercise, every day of our lives. We have faith that the sun will rise tomorrow and faith that taxes will go up. :D That's not the same as living in biblical lala land.

killing someone for picking up sticks on a Sunday, forcing a rape victim to marry her rapist, some is just hard to find a "moral" reason behind it

Yep, the word I see used in that verse is "ησυχια" - http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 Timothy 2:12&version=TR1550

Its meaning is given thus: http://translation.babylon.com/greek/to-english/ησυχία/
    n. calmness, ease, noislessness, oyster, privacy, quiescence, quiescency, quiet, quietness, quietude, stillness

Now, knowing this, do you feel that the passage has somehow been mistranslated or misunderstood? Do you have a fact-based reason for arguing so, or are you just scrambling to excuse an ancient sexist text?

Nine verses earlier the exact same word was used and translated differently because it had nothing to do with women.
During the time of the Bible and most other religious texts (even today in most countries) women had no rights or were regarded as basically a means to reproduce. I didn't create that feeling and don't have it myself, but neither did Jesus. If you'll recall, you know he even saved an adulterous woman from being stoned to death.

So, was the passage mistranslated or misunderstood..... I would say so. You can read the text and basically try and make it say what you want and probably even try to justify it, but there is one thing that none of the non believers can deny.... That is that Christianity does lead people to treat others the way they want to be treated. That is fair, honest, and with love. That eats you guys up that you can't shake that doesn't it??? Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

And if you will look that is part of the Old Testament which was law for Jews living in Palestine prior to Jesus. God is teaching everyone who reads the Bible that He will kill anyone who adds human effort to faith alone in Jesus Christ for salvation. Salvation is by grace through faith PLUS NOTHING

Again, I don't pretend to know it all or understand it all.

I like the Old Testament better than the new. I am not affiliated with any particular religion, but I think people will be more motivated to do the right thing out of fear than out of love. Works for me!
