The biggest career terminating flaw these days is racism. And it is supposed mani- fested in relatively benign remarks ("All lives matter"; "Asians are smart"; "What is your accent?") taken out of context and for which the speaker apologizes and then is fired or expelled anyway. It also results in ostracism. Acknowledging that it is very bad, how exactly is it any worse than homophobia, transphobia, greed, pride, cruelty, violence, lust, dishonesty, impiety, adultery, falsity, drunkenness, child neglect, misogyny, narcissism, xenophobia, duplicity, hypocrisy, judgmentalism, or covetousness? I can't imagine a news story with the headline "Star recruit for the Red Sox overheard in a bar making irreverent remarks." No one cares. Or if there were, it would not generate the same interest as a story about the same athlete telling a crude sex joke in front of women. And then a story of him making an arguably racist observation would be much more compelling (and newsworthy). Why? Who established the current hierarchy of character flaws and sins?
I have no idea where folks who post like this live or work. I VERY rarely encountered racism or all those other hateful "-isms". Where I worked, people were very professional. No one really cared about such things because they weren't on the radar. You can be offended by anything if want to be offended.
You're ignoring my question (which is your right), which is about the hierarchy of sins. We can't take seriously any claim that all the defects in my list are punished equally in today's America.
I didn't see much in the way of racism growing up in the West - but damn, when I moved to the South, and you got a bunch of white guys talking amongst themselves - there damn sure was nasty remarks made about black people. I spend more time in my home in Montana now than the Florida place.
Certainly not treated equally. Remember Al Franken? He was run out of office for pretending to grab a woman's chest ....Trump? He was elected President after a very public affair, cheating on his present wife with porn stars, and being accused of 20 different sexual assaults.
IMO, when people are repressed for long periods of time and gain traction in equal opportunities, there tends to be over reactions in earl stages. Also, it takes a few generations to weed out the inequalities that existed for old people don't like to change and sometimes can't change from what they knew all their lives. And with everyone having a phone recorder today, everyone can post news.
There's also a question of tolerance. When I was a kid, there were lots of ethnic jokes. No one was offended. No one screamed racism or some other ism. They were just jokes. No one really cared one way or the other. Folks today are too sensitive.

We'll see how great Putin's strategy works out in about 6 months. He could gain a little land and have his own economy blow up in the process -- or he could end up mired in a running separatist war for the next ten years. Incursions of this type don't have a great long term record of working out.
All true. But be that as it may, what Putin did leading up to his Ukraine invasion, and the beginning hours, was brilliant strategy. Heck, Hitler was brilliant too... fromgrabbing the Sudetenland to the Munich Pact... right up until his invasion of Russia. He ended up dead, but that does not detract from the fact that in 1939, 1940, et al... he was brilliant.
First, lets not replace 'character flaw' with 'sin' as though they are synonyms. They are not. Second 'character flaw' is a bit broad. The workplace normally cares about one's work habits at work. Your employers traditionally cared mostly about what you say or do on the premises, during work hours and while in the company uniform and how it impacted on productivity, the company's reputation, and employee morale. It still does. But social media has broadened the size of the audience well beyond your co-workers and your boss so now what is or is not your employer's business is a lot more ambiguous. But the real answer about hierarchy is 100% about liability. So, it's actually your employer's legal department that have shuffled the hierarchy. Tardiness and sloth don't cost nearly a company as much as even the threat of a juicy lawsuit. Phrases like 'sexual harassment', 'discrimination' and 'hostile work environment' become big ticket costs to your employer, long before any settlement offer comes along, let alone the testimony in a courtroom, simply by seeing a suit filed and having the first article hit the local paper. A couple of leaks about the depositions can do bottom line damage via a drop in the stock, or some piqued interest in some former employees that can become class action material.

We used to make up our own minds about right and wrong. No one was afraid to do so. We avoided weirdos, emulated heroes and sent evildoers to jail. Now there are no standards, no rules. Let criminals go... act as strangely as you wish and expect to be the CEO tomorrow. Its a world gone mad. Yet have hope! There are many of us that still live in a world where achievement, rather than ethnicity, gets rewarded.... where contribution to society, not skin color leads to success.... and a constructive attitude, rather than whining and complaining translates into happiness.

Entertainment, music, news and politicians lead the way in dumbness and have unknowingly tapped into this subset of ignorance . Yes, yes, but I am still left to wonder why and how "racism" (and not gluttony, pride, wastefulness, profligacy, even child abuse) came to be the mortalest of mortal sins from which there is no salvation.
