The parents of Ethan Crumbley, the teenager who in 2021 opened fire at his high school in Oxford, Michigan, are going on trial for manslaughter in cases that will test the limits of who is responsible for a mass shooting.

James and Jennifer Crumbley have pleaded not guilty to four charges of involuntary manslaughter for their alleged roles in their son’s rampage, which left four students dead and seven others wounded. They face up to 15 years in prison.

They are standing trial separately. Opening statements in Jennifer Crumbley’s trial began Thursday, and James Crumbley’s trial is tentatively scheduled to start March 5.

In bringing manslaughter charges, prosecutors alleged the gunman’s parents are also responsible for the students’ deaths – a novel and unusual legal theory.

I was going to revive an old Crumbley thread, but why not go new?

I'm a little surprised each parent will be tried separately, since it was seemingly a team effort to arm their disturbed teen, but I guess each did different things to that end

I know this is a stretch to charge parents for manslaughter for the murders committed by their child, but from all the media stories out there on this couple and that period, it seems warranted here. I'd like to think a good outcome here could actually be a deterrent to proactively arming your obviously disturbed child.

Who's on team Michigan and who's on team Criminal Parenting?

While I think parents should be responsible for the actions of their minor children, such as paying to fix something their kid vandalized, getting charged for manslaughter is going too far.

While I think it's as high a bar as can be imagined in our criminal justice system, I think there can be exceptions.

Nobody disagrees with paying for vandalization, but that normally doesn't cost lives... Arming your teen can, and did here...

I read the kid is appealing his life sentence..... good luck with that... With the proper mental care (and legal separation from his parents), he actually might not be a danger to society someday, but it will take years to determine that...

That's certainly possible, I mean, after all, they let John Hinckley out.

I disagree, especially if the parents were negligent.

Seeing that they armed their kid — they are responsible

    Throw the book at them

Going back in time about the parents of shooters there are quite a few who enabled their kid in obtaining firearms and not doing zilch about those firearms when they knew their kid was mentally unstable and violent
Most were an open book on social media too and it's not that hard to track them if the want is there..
    Charging parents/adults is long overdue.

I'm suing the parents of all people who have been rude to me on here for pain and mental anguish, because your actions are THEIR fault, not YOUR own. Man, is the world really coming to this?

In New York about 30 cop killers were released in the last ten years or so.

Idk if manslaughter charges appropriate, but supplying a gun to your child who is asking for mental support seems to be a terrible idea.

Maybe why they're having separate trials?
    Are they separated or divorced?

    Beyond a doubt.

'Oxford school shooter’s mom said her ‘biggest fear was that he was gonna turn the gun on himself,’ prosecutors say'
    Dec. 2022

    snip:

"Prosecutors in Michigan disclosed more evidence in recent court filings they say shows the mother of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley knew about his unhealthy mental state when the parents bought him a gun last November.

“You know my biggest fear was that he was gonna turn the gun on himself,” Jennifer Crumbley, his mother, said in the back of the police car after the shooting, according to one filing.

The quote was included in a filing from Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald that opposed the parents’ latest effort to appeal their bond that has kept them behind bars for over a year.'

Sorry, didn't see your equally good post first...

MAGA seems to like to comment on facts in the case they know nothing about... you and I would find that sort of humiliating.... MAGA = Freedom...

Well, good thing they aren't charged with being stupid, although that status certainly won't help them at trial.

You know what doesn't make sense? Taking the statement of one person like you're doing here and pretending that it represents everyone of that political persuasion. That doesn't make sense at all but don't let that stop your broad brush from laying down giant swaths...

So, lets buy him a firearm cause that will certainly un-spiral him, eh?
Looks like her defense lawyer has no where to go but down.

'Watch Live: Trial of Jennifer Crumbley, mother of Oxford High School shooter, gets underway'

    snips:
'The prosecution told the court that the mother had several chances to intervene in her son's downward spiral but that she had failed to do so, and due to this, is responsible for her son's downward spiral, but she had failed to do so, and due to this, she is responsible for the deaths of the four students."

    snip:

"Jennifer Crumbley's attorney, Shannon Smith, began her opening statements by quoting Taylor Swift's song "Bad Blood" and said, "Band-Aids don't fix bullet holes," claiming that Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald is trying to put a Band-Aid on problems that cannot be fixed just by putting the parents on trial."

"Smith claims Jennifer didn't know much about the guns in the house and placed the blame on her husband."

    "Bye-Bye Birdie.

Bird evidence" excluded from Crumbley's trial

Her attorneys requested that the "bird evidence," which relates to her son torturing and killing birds, be excluded from her trial.

"The 'bird evidence' is so extremely disgusting, sickening, and appalling that its admission would certainly inflame the passions of the jury," according to the motion. Matthews agreed to exclude it from the trial.'
