This is an interesting choice for Trump, and I suspect more him just being angry than actually thinking through the political ramifications. Trump has called for McConnell to be booted from leadership before, but doing it again now seems foolish and likely to emphasize Trump's loss of clout with the party. I say this because (1) it isn't going to happen; if the party has to choose between doing what Trump demands and keeping McConnell, they'll undoubtedly choose McConnell (as they did last time). It's foolish to turn this into a "pick me or him" fight when you know the answer is going to be "him." (2) It's clear to anyone who's paid attention that McConnell has done remarkably well in keeping his party united in opposition, granting 0 votes to Build Back Better or the Inflation Reduction Act and forcing Biden to use executive action on loan forgiveness. He's done all he can do since the Democrats have the tie-breaker vote, and of course the reason they have that vote is that Trump lost re-election. Or, if you're conspiratorially minded, Trump spectacularly failed to defend the nation from having the election stolen. Either way, we're where we are because, when he was the man in charge, Trump failed to keep the Whitehouse. And finally (3) there's now a fairly decent chance that the Democrats will hold the Senate and the Trump will be [rightly or wrongly] blamed for the GOP's failure to take it. If/when Fetterman beats Oz in Pennsylvania and ESPECIALLY if Warnock beats Walker in Georgia (both of which currently seem more likely than not), Trump will be blamed for having pushed forward unorthodox, baggage-laden, and ultimately losing candidates over the objections of the party establishment. For the moment Trump can celebrate how well his chosen candidates did in their primaries. But if those same candidates go down to defeat in November, everyone's going to remember that it's his fault they were on the ballot. https://thehill.com/homenews/361476...nnell-to-be-ousted-as-gop-leader-immediately/
I predict more sobbing about alleged election-rigging to come. Why blame Trump when you can blame non-existent fraud instead? (Not you the poster, just rhetorically speaking) Trump really should let go of the GOP and move on. He was so toxic as to fail to be reelected after one term, so why on earth would any reasonable person think he is good for the party going forward?
Yes, it was Trump chosen candidates which the Republican Primary voters went along with and nominated that will help the Democrats retain control of the Senate along with picking up a couple of seats to boot. Oz in PA, Walker in GA are terrible general election candidates. You also have Vance in OH who is currently tied with Ryan, the Democrat. Masters in AZ wasn’t a good choice either. Budd in NC another Trumper is tied. Johnson in WI trails Barnes by 8 points. Trump is a gift that keeps right on giving to Democrats with very poor quality and disliked candidates by independents for the general election. Trump should get the blame and get blamed big time for the GOP failure to retake the senate. Trump is the best asset the Democrats have for this midterm. Then there are the governors, the Democrats will gain at least 3, perhaps 4. What’s with all this red wave talk I keep hearing from Trumpers?
