The consequences of nationalism are rarely positive! Trump has managed to show zero comprehension of intra industry trade, whilst also showing contempt for multilateral agreement successful at removing unfair trade arrangements. Takes effort to be that useless...
President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the United States and the European Union had launched a “new phase” in their relationship, saying that the two major economies would start negotiations immediately on a number of areas that include working toward “zero tariffs” on industrial goods, and further cooperation on energy issues. “We agreed today, first of all, to work together towards zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies for the non-auto industrial goods,” Trump said at a joint press conference in the White House Rose Garden with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
They've been negotiating for yonks. That was nothing to do with the promotion of fair trade. Trump's attack on the WTO shows he has ZERO interest in that. It reflects instead a call for further neoliberalism and mechanisms to allow corporations to make further inefficient rent. Nationalism spreads ignorance like a virus. Folk become blind to the suffering. They're too busy chanting U S A...
I wouldn't be very surprised if this is the first in a wave of layoffs to come. The president seems to be under the false assumptions that A) other countries pay tariffs directly to the US and B) this sort of taxation is likely to have a positive impact on our trade deficit and finally C) this will "bring jobs home". None of this is true or grounded in any sort of historical context, but what's new in the Republican world of voodoo economics. You'd think three decades (or more) worth of evidence to the contrary would be enough to tilt the windmills, but I'm utterly convinced these are decisions made from rationality but rather emotional policies hinged on 'what ought to be'.
obviously if imports get more expensive domestic gets cheaper. The simplest things confuse a liberal - right?
if you understood you would not be so afraid to why it is idiocy. What did we learn from the libcommies fear?
American nationalism spreads the genius of our Founders who just won 2 world wars, the cold -potentially nuclear- war, and freed 1.4 billion from communist en masse starvation in China. Now do you understand?
There's not much point as a core feature of nationalism is that they herd. Government can do anything and they'll nod their little heads and think "that's a good idea". Such blind allegiance is a terrible thing. But let's at least try... First, the idea that trade wars shift us towards free trade is of course drivel. We do have resulting economic destruction leading sensible folk to realise "oops, perhaps following policy completely inconsistent with trade analysis, from Ricardian comparative advantage to Krugman's new trade theory, wasn't a cunning idea". However, why not just avoid that economic destruction? Second, we already know this has naff all to do with trade liberalisation. We see that with Trump's assault on the WTO's dispute settlement system. The mechanism used to ensure multilateralism operates effectively.
Hmm an we did all the above by our own actions without help from the rest of the free world? It would be nice if you and Trump and the other supporters of this conman would had read a few history books.
WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Ford is restructuring and has been all year, it is stopping production of all passenger cars except the Mustang, and is transitioning to only trucks and SUVs. That was announced in April. It has nothing to do with tariffs. It does have everything to do with CAFE (MPG requirements) and all the other EPA type rules. CAFE requires a corporate avg mpg of 54.4 by 2025 for passenger cars, which is impossible for internal combustion engines - and that means no company can meet CAFE if it uses internal combustion engines and thats the political goal behind CAFE. Even though the Trump admin waved that requirement, automakers know that if/when the Democrats get power again they will put the impossible requirement back in place. And the market is shifting away from cars and to trucks and SUVs - people don't want the little eco-boxes that the environmental and safety requirements are forcing auto manufacturers to produce. Thats why you see all these pickup trucks with tiny cargo beds but luxury crew cabs, they are vehicles with a large interior and luxury like a passenger car but an open storage area instead of a trunk (but many have covers over the cargo bed). Ford is obviously going to lay off people. They are shutting down their passenger car lines.
Given the automobile industry is characterised by intra-industry trade, its extraordinarily naive to think its not negatively effected by Trump's tariffs.
actually we created the free world by winning WW 1&2. Our Founders fired the shot heard around the world, no one else did and no one else is the last best for freedom on earth. Do you understand?
1) if I said we did it all on our own I will pay you $10,000. Bet? 2) why is the liberal so afraid to point the best example of the "help" we got?? What does he learn from his fear?
the issue is whether American industry is hurt and whether tariffs will lead to free trade or more tariffs. NOw do you understand?
