[Turkish shampoo ad featuring Hitler stirs protests]

A shampoo commercial on Turkish television has drawn protests from Turkey’s Jewish community for using Adolf Hitler to promote the product.

The Chief Rabbinate of Turkey issued a press statement yesterday to condemn the commercial and protest the company.

“Despite the discussion we had with the owner of the advertising agency in which we shared our sadness and disappointment, we regretfully noticed that the commercial in question still appears in the media,” read the statement. “We would like to make a reminder once again that it’s totally unacceptable to make use of Hitler – the most striking example of cruelty and savagery in history, who caused the death of millions of people with his perverse mentality and twisted ideology – in order to make a difference or raise awareness in a commercial. We reprimand this mindset and emphasize the importance of a public apology in order to repair the damage that this commercial has caused to society’s conscience.”

The commercial shows black-and-white footage of Hitler making a speech dubbed in Turkish with German subtitles. “If you are not wearing female clothes, do not use shampoo for women. Here it is. If you are a man, you have to use this shampoo. Real men use it,” Hitler says in promoting the shampoo which the company claims was produced for the special needs of men.

Using Hitler, who massacred more than 6 million people – most of whom were Jews – in an advertisement for any reason is categorically unacceptable, Chief Rabbi İshak Haleva said.

“This is beyond all ethics, as well as a huge insult to human rights,” Haleva said in a written statement. “We believe and expect that the necessary sensitivity will be shown and that a correction will be made soon.”

I can see this becoming a cult product over here if anybody latches onto it .
Forgetting the obvious PC angle -- or lack of it --- I have never laughed so much for days .
Just thinking about the Client /Agency discussion meetings has me in stitches.
I wonder if they have the nerve to brazen it through with a Poster Campaign ?

    " Try it today
    It's a Gas "

Apologies to the obvious people who will not be able to see anything funny in it . I will sort that out with my psychiatrist .

I'm not surprised. These are the same people who refuse to admit that they committed genocide on the Armenians.

Turkey, the birthplace of the Fourth Reich.

Turkish television? I live in Turkey and I have never seen a shampoo called "Biomen" in Turkey nor I have seen such a commercial in any Turkish TV channel. What kind of stupid propaganda is that? The only known bio- shampoos in Turkey are Bioxcin and Bioblas.

This picture is from very long time ago and is from a meeting of a part called "Felicity Party" (you can also tell by a flag in background), which cannot even exceed 1% of votes. Stop trying to throw your dirt by generalizing it to Turkish people.

Good to hear this. I guess it's a kind of strange joke. In Germany is for example existing a very funny story about a leasing-contract for a car in combination with pictures of Hitler. For Germans this is really very amusing.

Forget it - must be a kind of joke. Hitler was someone who was somehow asexual and everything else than a sexy man. Shampoo and he is a crazy combination. See also: http://www.myvideo.de/watch/56728/Walter_Moers_Adolf_Ich_hock_in_meinem_Bonker

    based on historical facts.
The Turks lost their Ottoman Empire on around 1917 because of their cooperation with Germany, and based again on history which repeats itself... they have much to lose credibility included.

World War 1 was lost for Germany and Austria because the USA decided to take part in this war. I never found out why the USA did this really. One result was it that Germany, Austria and the Ottoman empire lost this war together.

And what was the question or comment for your answer? I just simple said that I think this video is a joke.

So what? Turkish people are bad because of a shampoo that noone ever heard of? Internet doesn't bother me, you can find everything on net. I urge you to find me the commercial in Turkish TVs as you say so, specifically in Show TV, Star TV, Kanal D, ATV or TRT.

Just because of advert of a private company on TV you will judge and sentence whole population of a country. is this a joke for gods sake ?

Alan how do you know that the guy who directed this advert is Turk ? Did you search for it or just trusted your 6th sense ? Maybe he's a Kurd like mate after all Turkey is full of Kurds as you know. And who pays the money airs his program on TV.

Seriously if you want to know the opinion of Turkish nation about Jews and other minorities this article would be a good starting point.

    my.news.yahoo.com/turkish-passport-untold-tale-holocaust-survivors-050835677.html

Even though we had dispute on humanitarian aid to Gazza in the last years Turkish nation still have sympathy to Jews. This year one of our Jewish citizen will represent us in Eurovision.

"Hitler" - more concrete: the imaginations lots of people have about him - would be good to sell bombs or weapons or fanatic ideas or something like this - why shampoo? No - I'm still sure it's a kind of strange joke.

Erdoğans party is very often accused of being pro Jewish there are books published claiming that he has Jewish ancestors with David star on Erdoßans head on the cover how can government do that under this circumstances ?

And after all why would government ban an advert in free market economy ? Government which governs least governs best. Nosy policies always cause more problem.

    By Daniel Pipes

A few days ago, Turkey’s foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, grandiloquently proclaimed that “if the world is on fire, Turkey is the firefighter. Turkey is assuming the leading role for stability in the Middle East.”

Such ambition is new for Ankara. In the 1990s, it contentedly fulfilled its NATO obligations and followed Washington’s lead. Starting about 1996, relations with Israel blossomed. In all, Turkish policy offered an attractive exception to the tyrannical, Islamist, and conspiracist mentality generally dominating Muslim peoples. That the country’s political leaders were corrupt and fumbling seemed of little consequence.

Those faults, however, proved extremely consequential, leading to the repudiation of long-established political parties and the victory of an Islamist party, Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP), in the elections of November 2002. By March 2003, in advance of the coming war in Iraq, the new government signaled that a new era had begun by refusing to permit American troops to traverse Turkish territory.

Over the next eight years, Turkish foreign policy became increasingly hostile to the West in general, and to the United States, France, and Israel in particular, as it warmed to governments in Syria, Iran, and Libya. This shift became particularly evident in May 2010, when Ankara both helped Tehran avoid sanctions for its nuclear program and injured Israel’s reputation with the Mavi Marmara–led flotilla.

But the full extent of Ankara’s Middle East ambitions emerged in early 2011, concurrent with the region’s far-reaching upheavals. Suddenly, Turks were ubiquitous. Their recent activities include:

Providing a model: Gül holds that Turkey can have a “great and unbelievable positive effect” on the Middle East — and he has some takers. For example, Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s newly legalized Ennahda movement, has stated: “We are learning from the experience of Turkey, especially the peace that has been reached in the country between Islam and modernity.”

Offering an economic lifeline to Iran: The Turkish president, Abdullah Gül, paid a state visit to Tehran in February, accompanied by a large group of businessmen, capping an evolution whereby, according to the Jamestown Foundation, “Turkey is becoming a major [economic] lifeline for Iran.” In addition, Gül praised the Iranian political system.

Obstructing foreign efforts in Libya: Starting on March 2, the Turkish government objected to any military intervention against Moammar Qaddafi’s regime. “Foreign interventions, especially military interventions, only deepen the problem,” Davutoğlu put it on March 14, perhaps worrying about a similar intervention to protect Kurds in eastern Turkey. When military operations began on March 19, Turkish forces did not take part. Turkish opposition delayed NATO’s engagement in Libya until March 31 and then freighted it with conditions.

Supporting Qaddafi: Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, helped Qaddafi by issuing both demagogic proclamations (“Turkey will never be a party that points a gun at the Libyan people”) and practical proposals (e.g., that Qaddafi salvage his rule by appointing a president). Ankara also offered, according to the Istanbul-based Hürriyet newspaper “to be involved in the distribution of humanitarian aid in Libya, to manage the Benghazi airport and to deploy naval forces to control the area between Benghazi and the Greek island of Crete.” In gratitude, Qaddafi replied, “We are all Ottomans.” In contrast, Libyan rebels fumed at and marched against the Turkish government.

Helping Damascus: In January, Ankara agreed to train Syrian troops. In March, Erdoğan publicly advised Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, on how to maintain power, perhaps fearful that Syria’s 1.4 million Kurds might win more autonomy and cause unrest among Turkey’s approximately 15 million Kurds.

Anti-Zionism: Ankara has emerged as the leader in delegitimizing Israel. Davutoğlu tries to unify its enemies while predicting Israel’s disappearance; a government-affiliated organization plans a new Gaza “freedom” flotilla with at least 15 ships taking part; and the deputy prime minister calls for a Libya-style bombing of Israel.

Ankara’s ambitions must be checked. Less provocatively and more intelligently than the Iranian regime, it aspires to reshape Muslim countries in its Islamist image. The opening salvos of this effort have gone well, being both effective and largely unnoticed.

Possible methods to block AKP influence include: expressing displeasure with Ankara’s “neo-Ottomanist” policies; publicly questioning whether Turkish actions are compatible with NATO membership; quietly encouraging opposition parties in the country’s June 2011 elections; and, at this moment of AKP hostility and of Kurdish uprisings in eastern Turkey, reconsidering the delicate question of Kurdish civil rights.

    — Daniel Pipes is director of the Middle East Forum and Taube distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University.
