I hadn't used the ignore function in years. But it hit me today that these two posters didn't have anything to offer to any conversation.. They were flippent, in poor taste and never used logic or rational thought in what they thought. Like immature high school kids so to speak. How many people do you have on ignore and why?
I regularly put everyone on iggy who does not have an avatar. This is because most of the spammers, shills, and trolls start up new accounts and never bother to choose an avatar. It is also because posters without an avatar are difficult to spot when you scan for their posts. All in all I have no patience for anyone without an avatar to go with their moniker. I also put anyone on iggy who uses a fallacy such as verbosity (repeating themselves) or ad hom (insults) after I have warned them about it and linked the Wiki fallacy list. These people invariably have low I/Q's and poor educations and are also not trained in proper etiquette nor in debating. Anyone who posts a troll thread title also goes on my iggy. Titles should summarize the topic of the thread and be unbiased. When they are not this person goes on iggy. So I have lots and lots on my iggy. The monikers/avatars that are left are fairly bright and interesting people. The ones on the iggy are definitely not.
Just went and counted. I have 87(!!!) people on ignore. But I've been on this site for 13 years, and most of those people don't post anymore. I put people on ignore when they prove, repeatedly, that they aren't worth paying attention to. Trolls, mostly. Or just too stupid, or too partisan, or too devoid of substance for me to care what they say. It's a bipartisan list, btw.
Actually besides these two..I've had only one ignore and eventually, I retracted it to give another shot.
I have 32 on 'ignore'..... my criteria are those posters that seem to only want to elicit a response instead of wanting to discuss or debate.
Yeah, I give people second chances, too. You have to work pretty hard to get on my ignore list, and even then l'll check on them every now and then to see if they have improved.
You're in no danger of getting added. I'm here for discussion. As long as someone is posting in good faith, it's good. Though there ARE a handful who are on there for being too stupid to take.
There are a lot of weirdos out there. If I think a person is seriously mentally disturbed, I will put them on ignore. At another forum, I had a guy threaten to slash my throat or something to that effect. I guess I made him angry or something . . .
Hah! I'll bet mine is pushing 200 by now. Of course half of those people probably haven't posted in years... ...but still.
None and never.... I feel it's cowardly, it's like admitting one can't handle words on a computer screen when they don't agree with one's opinion. If I feel someone's posts are a waste of time I simply don't bother reading them...it's not difficult...(shrug))
I recently cleared my ignore list of 38 to give everyone a second chance, and so far, only 5 have made it back on. I generally ignore posters who: A) Add nothing of substance to the conversation; generally trolls and partisans who never post except to say "republicans are racists" or "liberals are idiots", etc. B) Engage in "Alinsky-5" type behavior. Ad-hom attacks, unfounded accusals of racism, bigotry, etc for purposes of derailing, baiting, etc. I am here to learn about things of which I am ignorant, to teach the things I have to offer, and to expand my horizons. The above type of posters offer me nothing of value, and don't care to hear my opinions.
I view an ignore list as a filter and time saver. Why waste my time even skipping someone's posts who are a waste of time. That said, I have only a few on my ignore list.
No, I stand by my post : None and never.... I feel it's cowardly, it's like admitting one can't handle words on a computer screen when they don't agree with one's opinion. If I feel someone's posts are a waste of time I simply don't bother reading them...it's not difficult...(shrug))"""" I guess since I'm retired that split second it takes to scroll past a post is not an issue.
I think I have two. Same reason - it isn't because they're impolite, they're far from the worst on that, but these two always have something nonsensical to say. One never really says anything - the other is so damned hyper-partisan that they even put my friends who work in politics to shame. I mean really - there are some posters who are more in the bag for their "side" than Alex Jones or Rachel Maddow.
Eh, I've never ignored anyone for having too good of an opposing argument, I relish that. There are just some that are such immense time wasters. And in my many years on this forum, I've only found two to be in that category. I don't see it as cowardice to say that someone's drivel isn't worth your time but, to each their own.
I've had one person on ignore, but that person was a stalker who followed me from another forum here and posted what he purported was personal information about me (it was inaccurate but oh well).
