So if China believes that South Korea or Japan are beginning to think in terms of needing nuclear weapons in order to defend themselves from a nuclear armed North Korea, they may adjust their thinking towards (and support of) Kim. While I agree with you that we need to address the proliferation issue, if we cannot get things under control, it will not remain the case that states like North Korea and Iran will end up enjoying a special monopoly status with regard to possessing these weapons. At some point, if your hostile neighbors possess nuclear weapons, the NPT becomes laughable and the world becomes a much more dangerous place. This is the significant issue we now find ourselves up against. If we can't get a handle on this, things are going to go from bad to worse.

 

I have always thought of the NPT as laughable based on the mere fact that it is a voluntary agreement and has a clause in it stating that even members that do sign on can un-sign at any time.
